It’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the sheer number of abilities you can upgrade in Black Myth: Wukong. Fortunately, the game encourages experimentation by allowing you to respec for free at any Shrine. Still, you’ll probably want to know what the best ones are that you should unlock throughout your journey. Keep reading to learn the best abilities for the early, mid, and late game.
Best Early Game Abilities¶
The early game of Black Myth: Wukong can be considered to be around the first chapter of the game, in Black Wind Mountain. During this stage of the game, you’ll be unlocking the various systems, learning how it all works, and just generally sitting there thinking to yourself “where should I put these points?”. Everyone will have a different playstyle in mind, but in our opinion, the abilities below are what we found to be the most useful during that time.
Stamina - Simian Agility and Deft Evasion¶
Both of these abilities make their home in the Foundations tab of your abilities and are what we consider to be some of the most important abilities you can invest in. Simian Agility will reduce the cost of Stamina for dodging, while Deft Evasion makes each dodge more flexible and agile. Seeing as your dodge is your primary defense mechanism in Black Myth: Wukong, we consider these to be crucial (and this entire tree, to be honest) and should arguably be your first purchase.
Immobilization - Crash¶
The Immobilization spell, the first one you unlock in the game, is perhaps one of the most useful ones available to you. When used, it will freeze the enemy in place for a time (even bosses), allowing you to get free hits in on them or allow you to backtrack and heal up. Crash is the first ability on the left side of the tree and will increase the damage you deal to any target that is Immobilized, get both levels of this ability as soon as you can!
Smash Stance Abilities and Exhilaration¶
Unlocking abilities in the Staff Stances tab will unlock a Focus Point at certain thresholds. The first comes after unlocking three abilities and will give you a total of three Focus Points. Any attack using Focus Points are potent, so having more of these early on is always a good thing. As for those three abilities, getting the two Smash Stance abilities and a level of Exhilaration will do the trick.
Transformations - Evergreen¶
Your Transformations are powerful tools that allow you to change your form into other creatures. The first one you get early in Chapter 1, Red Tides, is a great source of free damage against bosses. Remember, when used, your Transformation has its own health gauge, making this useful to get damage on a boss before it runs out. The Evergreen ability, then, will reduce the decay of Might for each level so putting points into this over time will allow you to stay in it for longer.
Survival - Robust Constitution and Rampant Vigor¶
If you’re ever lost for where to put a point, you can’t go wrong with either of these. Each point slightly increases your max HP or Stamina, two very important stats and if you find yourself really struggling, put more focus here. Still, we’d definitely prioritize the abilities above before focusing on these.
As you progress through Chapter 1 and hit around Levels 15-20, look to continue to progress down both the dodge side of the Stamina tree and any further upgrades to the left side of your Immobilization tree. Don’t forget to keep putting points into the Staff Stances abilities too (we recommend sticking to Smash Stance) as unlocking more Focus Points is always useful.
