There are lots of hidden side quests in Black Myth: Wukong, which usually follow the formula of finding the NPC, exhausting its dialogue, doing what they ask of you, and returning to the NPC. For the most part, they’re easy enough to follow, but the middle part of figuring out what they want you to do is the hard part.
The !Fox Guai quest begins in Chapter 3 where you’ll need to transform into a fox, traverse a temple, and defeat a boss. Sounds fun, right? Well, read on to find out exactly where you start the quest, where you need to go, and what you’ll be rewarded for your efforts.
Fox Guai Location¶
To start the quest, progress through Chapter 3 until you reach the Forest of Felicity Shrine in the Valley of Ecstasy. From the Shrine, follow the path forward to find a corpse to the right of the gate with a fox fur wrapped around its neck.
Interact with the corpse to get some dialogue (no, it’s not the corpse speaking, it’s the fox). Keep interacting with the corpse until the Fox exhausts all of its dialogue, and you’ll be given the Snow Fox Brush Key Item before you’re transformed into a fox. This starts the Fox Guai quest.
Find the Monk in Thunderclap Temple¶
The fox will ask you to enact its revenge on the Monk who left it to die. Although you’re in Fox Form, you can get out of this transformation for now, as you don’t need to be in it until later on.
From the corpse, follow the winding path for a while until you reach the Temple Entrance Shrine in New Thunderclap Temple. Go across the courtyard opposite the Shrine, head through the temple, and exit the other side. Continue forward, head up the stairs to your left, and walk straight on until you can take the stairs down to the left where you’ll find another building you can enter.
Go into the building, head up the stairs to the right, and exit at the top. Turn right, and go through the next set of doors to your right. Finally, go to the bottom of the stairs opposite, go into your inventory, and use the Snow Fox Brush to transform. In Fox Form, head into the temple atop the stairs to get a cutscene followed by a boss fight against the Non-Void.
Non-Void Boss Fight¶
This is an elusive boss who will dodge at least half of your attack combos, including your Focus Strikes and Spells. For this reason, you’ll need to be patient while you chip away at his health. The boss doesn’t have too many attacks to worry about, as it only has about three attacks.
In general, always expect to disrupt your combos with a palm strike melee attack, usually after the boss dodges your attack. He can chain two or three together in quick succession, so always be ready to dodge another. Aside from the palm strike, the boss will get some distance and perform a spell that picks up the scriptures of the floor before he sends them your way.
This attack will follow you around the arena until it dissipates, so you’ll need to keep moving while you avoid the boss’s third attack, which is small magic bolts at your location. These are easily avoided by dodging to the side (or forward) when one approaches you.
This boss shouldn’t cause you too many problems due to its lack of attacks, but if you want to make it easy, using a fully upgraded Pluck of Many on the boss will destroy it. Once you defeat the boss, you’ll get the usual rewards, but if you wait for him to finish speaking, you can get his Spirit.
Return to Fox Guai¶
Now that you’ve completed the revenge for the Fox, it’s time to head back to get your reward. Return to the Forest of Felicity Shrine in the Valley of Ecstasy, and head to the corpse/fox for more dialogue until the fox disappears. It will leave behind the Snow Fox Brush Curio, which moderately increases the duration of transformations.
That’s it for the Fox Guai quest, but if you’ve been following the Horse Guai quest from Chapter 1, another step of his quest is near where you fought the Non-Void; instead of turning right, turn left when you exit the building. Read our Horse Guai Quest Guide for more information.
