Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Phoenix and Kujata Boss Guide

By
Jarrod Garripoli

As part of the superboss journey, you will end up going to Gilgamesh Island. After meeting up with the interdimensional traveler here, he will have you go through a tempering process before you’re able to fight him. This will involve doing three fights, where you have to do battle with two of the game’s six summons in each one. This page will focus on the dual summon fight that includes both "Phoenix" iconPhoenix and "Kujata" iconKujata, at the Shrine of the Moonbow.

The Phoenix and Kujata fight will be at the Shrine of the Moonbow.

Character Loadouts

Note that it doesn’t matter which characters you use for these battles, as no one really has an advantage over another, so just use who you’re comfortable with using. That being said, you should be using armor that has the highest number of materia slots here, along with a similar weapon. Materia is very important for these battles, especially this one, as you want use of three of the four elements. The only element you don’t need is lightning, so make sure you have two people each who can use "Fire" iconFire, "Ice" iconIce and "Wind" iconWind. To make things easier, have "Elemental Materia" iconElemental Materia linked to Fire on your armor, to make Phoenix’s attacks less threatening.

Outside of that, having Magnify linked to a maxed "Barrier" iconBarrier is ideal, for Manawall that will help with mitigating damage. You might also want a Revival Materia on all three characters, too, although you can use items in this battle. Naturally, everyone should have a "Healing Materia" iconHealing Materia equipped, as well, but it doesn’t hurt to have one or two people with Prayer. The other staples, like the "Steadfast Block Materia" iconSteadfast Block Materia and "Precision Defense Focus Materia" iconPrecision Defense Focus Materia, help too. Since you can use items, have someone with the "Item Master Materia" iconItem Master Materia and don’t forget the HP Up and MP Up ones.

Phoenix and Kujata Boss Strategy

It should be quickly noted that the bosses function pretty much the same as their Combat Simulator fights, so it’s a good idea to brush on them by doing those to get used to their attacks. One main difference is that Phoenix will not summon any of the normal enemies, as you will shortly see. There is a catch, though, as the tether thing still comes into play here in this battle. When the battle begins, you will see a line connecting Kujata and Phoenix, and if you try to attack Phoenix, you will notice it receives very little damage.

(1 of 4) Your first target should be Kujata, as it is tethered to Phoenix.

Well, Kujata is tethered to Phoenix, so you will need to focus on it first. Kujata doesn’t have any tricks up its sleeve, so use the appropriate elemental spells on it to eventually pressure it and avoid having it use Tri-Disaster. That means you will want to have Fire, Ice and "Wind Materia" iconWind Materias equipped on your party members here. Naturally, Phoenix will also be weak to Ice, so you don’t have to worry about lightning at all. If you have the two Elemental Materias you can get at this point and gotten them to level 2, then link them with a "Fire Materia" iconFire Materia to become immune to fire damage.

This makes Phoenix a lot easier to manage while you concentrate on Kujata. As soon as you defeat Kujata, Phoenix will use Rebirth Flame and bring Kujata back once more, but the link will now be gone. Note that if you do a lot of damage to Phoenix while it’s doing that ability, it might be possible to stop the skill from being used, but this strategy will continue on as if it did use it. With the tether now gone, Phoenix will now be susceptible to full damage and you should go right after it. Now, things can be a little hectic, but you should try to pay attention to Kujata somewhat, as you don’t want it to use Tri-Disaster.

However, besides knocking the elemental affinity off of Kujata, your full attention should be on Phoenix. Blast it with Blizzaga, although this might be difficult with it moving around so much. If you can wait until it does Empowering Flame, then that is a great time to use the above spell, as it won’t be moving. To be careful, you probably want to stop Empowering Flame, as it gives Phoenix some buffs and in the solo fight, it would cast Rebirth Flame after using it twice. It will attempt to do the same thing here and Empowering Flame not only buffs itself, but also Kujata at the same time.

(1 of 3) Unlike the simulator battles, you can use items in these double summon fights.

When you have finally brought down Phoenix, Kujata will be left for you to conquer. Nothing else will happen, as Kujata doesn’t gain any buffs or moves, so just fight it as normal. Upon defeating both Phoenix and Kujata, then you will be done with this trial and are one step closer to the Gilgamesh fight.
