In Lords of the Fallen, you have three magic types which are Inferno, Radiance, and Umbral. The first two scale of their own respective stat, but to use Umbral spells, you’ll need to level both of the stats up due to its scaling of both Inferno and Radiance. A lot of Umbral magic does wither and/or frost damage which makes it strong against all enemies as well as having a higher damage output than the other magic types. However, this comes at a cost due to Umbral predominantly dealing wither damage, enemies can heal themselves from attacking you unless the spell outright kills the enemy. Whether you’re looking for an Umbral Catalyst to start your journey with, or you’re looking for the best Umbral Catalyst to upgrade, read here.
Where to Find Umbral Catalysts¶
Unlike the Inferno Catalyst, the first Umbral Catalyst can be purchased from Molhu in the Skyrest Hub area. Simply enter the Umbral Realm, and walk up the stairs opposite the NPC next to the Vestige. The catalyst is called the Charm of Fortune’s Sight, and it’ll set you back 650 of your hard-earned Vigor. Alternatively, if you’ve unlocked the secret Putrid Child class, it will come equipped with the Putrid Child Catalyst which can be obtained later on.
Every Umbral Catalyst Location¶
Here is a list of every Umbral Catalyst you can find in the game:
Name | Location | Spell Power | Min. Scaling | Max. Scaling | Spell Slots |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Charm of Fortune’s Sight | Purchased from Molhu (Umbral Realm) in Skyrest for 650 Vigor. | 101 | C- | B | 3 |
Nohuta Effigy | You can acquire this catalyst inside the Sunless Skein Cistern area which leads to Revelation Depths. From the Skinstealer boss, head down the stairs to find a parasite-protected axeman. Just beyond him is a door to the sewer area. Here, take the first left, and then head left again. Switch to the Umbral Realm, and Soul Flay the Umbral Belly near the imps. | 142 | D- | D+ | 3 |
Lost Berescu’s Catalyst | This can be found in a small encampment that is hidden behind a breakable barricade. Just beyond the barricade are a lot of enemies which includes two Holy Bulwark enemies. Inside the encampment is a hole leading to a darkened area which has an Umbral Belly you can Soul Flay which contains the catalyst. This encampment is in between the imp room (past the bridge shortcut), and the main boss of the area. About 3/4 through the area. | 97 | C+ | A | 5 |
Sunken Beseecher | Defeat the boss in the Abbey of the Hallowed Sisters. | 96 | C | B+ | 5 |
Hungered Knot | Found in Fief of the Chill Curse. From the Vestige of Svornil, follow the path straight forward (must have unlocked the shortcut gate first) through the gate, and follow it to the end. Switch to the Umbral Realm, drop into the area below, and Soul Flay the Umbral Belly in there to acquire the catalyst. | 120 | D | C | 3 |
Putrid Child Catalyst | Starting equipment for the secret Putrid Child Class, or found in The Empyrean, inside an Umbral Belly when trying to access the blocked-off library. It is in a location with lots of Umbral Eggs where you’ll need to Soul Flay an Umbral Belly to head across a bridge on the upper level. | 110 | D+ | C+ | 3 |
Best Umbral Catalyst in Lords of the Fallen¶
Nohuta Effigy is one of the better catalysts due to its high Spell Power, with Hungered Knot just behind it. However, if you’re heavily investing in the Umbral stat then Lost Berescu’s Catalyst comes out on top, but you won’t notice a massive difference until you’re at a higher Inferno/Radiance level (30-50). So, in short, the higher your inferno and radiance stat are, use Nohuta Effigy or Hungered Knot, and if you don’t have them, the Charm of Fortune’s Sight. If your Inferno and Radiance are at the lower end of the spectrum (15-24), use Nohuta Effigy, or Hungered Knot.
