The Tower of Penance is a strange location, offering players a heavy dose of verticality and fall-to-your-death antics in the process. With craziness going on in this miniature platforming adventure, you will easily find many missable loot options in the process. So, to aid you with working out on what you need to do, alongside ensuring you don’t miss out on the good loot. Here’s a more in-depth look into a Tower of Penance Walkthrough in Lords of the Fallen.
Tower of Penance Walkthrough¶
The start of the Tower of Penance begins once you get the Abbot Vernoff key from the Manse of Hallowed Brothers. This unlocks the doors leading to the tower. However, you must beat a mini-boss before advancing. The Carrion Knight boss is cheeky, with its spear-type attacks, poison breath, and the ability to flood the entire bridge with poison fields. Ensure you’ve got some antidote to reduce that poison that will build up quickly, and wreck the boss down when it does that move. It’s a fairly simple boss to beat outside of that last-moment cheese.
Once the boss is defeated, you can move on. Be aware there’s an Umbral platform by some ladders to the left of the bridge as you get to the tower proper. It takes you to a secret Umbral realm platform area under the bridge, with a dagger you can grab if you want it. Meanwhile, there are other items like the Braided Ring, which buffs your summon companions with an extra range attack, making the Inferno Radiance and Umbral Guardian spells worth using in the damage-to-mana cost ratio over other spells. Whether you want to use it is another matter.
From there, your task is to progress through the Tower by using the wooden elevator to the left of the bridge. When you reach the top, we recommend placing a Vestige Seed at the top for fall-to-your-death respawn points, just in case. When you’re ready to go, enter Umbral, and you’ll need to start soul-flaying some platforms to get to the ladder you need to go. From there, you will need to rinse and repeat various ladders, soul-flaying platforms and other tricks to continue down to the main floor, where you can open the shortcut from the main door and access the bridge once again. Be careful of the hidden spiky helmet people and mages who will try their hardest to blast you or spear you off the edge to your untimely demise.
When you’re ready to progress again, you can find more ladders to descend and gaps in the floor to continue working the way down the tower. Note that some of the floors will require you to pull levers to raise hanging cells and other blockages to access these ladders and gaps. There’s more lever pulling, ladder climbing and crossbowmen dodging antics, alongside the annoying Carrion Knights blocking pathways and being a menace in general.
When you reach the bottom, you must deal with another crossbowman and a clubman. These typically spawn along the larger corridor leading to the outside world. If you fancy some additional loot, you can enter the Umbral and climb a ladder at the end of the tunnel near the outdoor ledge. This will take you through a wild pathway, defended by some egg sacs and moth girl. At the back is a soul flay object, which can give you a Saintly Quintessence. Don’t forget the memory that you can soul-flay - if you want some more background context to Byron’s storyline that is (Umbral Scourings are a nice bonus too!).
From there, you want to work your way through the tunnel at the shrine. Don’t forget to pick up the Radiant Preacher’s Catalyst, too, before entering the cave. The pathway takes you down towards a boss room. You can plant a Vestige seed down there too, to get a short respawn point for the boss.
When you’re ready to fight the boss, you will fight Tancred. Tancred is a two-phase boss, which is a Hallowed Knight model with a similar type of radiance magic to that which the Paladin-type enemies and Pieta uses to do ranged attacks and mirror image attacks. When Tancred is defeated, you will need to fight his Inferno kindred demon form, with many fast light attacks, some jumps and fire breath. The best way to trade with the demon dog version is to continue dodging, and trading when the boss does its jumps, and then fire breath attacks. These offer the safest opening to defeat the guardian boss.
With the Guardian boss defeated, you can now get the key and Remembrance from the boss and work your way back through the tunnel. You should have claimed a key from his loot and memory, which will allow you to access the elevator next to the shrine you got the catalyst from. Ascend up twice, and you’ll find the Beacon. Either interact with the beacon or not, and grab the map of the Abbey. You can also Umbral walk through some planks of wood at the bottom ring path and get the Radiant Catalyst gear if you fancy some new holy drip.
With that said, you’ll have now completed the Tower of Penance in Lords of the Fallen. You’ll now have one last main story beacon and new area to handle, before you can really start seeing the consequences of your actions.
