One of the features in Lords of the Fallen is Runes. When you upgrade your weapons or shields, they will unlock rune slots that allow you to slot passive skills into your equipment in the form of runes which will increase your overall power. There are many types of Runes to be found in the game, thirty-nine to be exact, so read below to find out what each one is, and what it does.
How to Equip Runes¶
Before you can equip Runes, you’ll need to unlock the function, by rescuing, and then giving the Blacksmith Gerlinde the Cracked Rune Tablet which can be found in Fitzroy’s Gorge. Once you have completed this prerequisite you’ll be able to obtain Runes and unlock slots for them. Runes can be equipped by upgrading a weapon or shield until it unlocks a rune slot. This slot will have a type/shape (read below) which will determine what type of rune fits into that specific piece of equipment.
Now, talk to Gerlinde at the Skyrest hub after you’ve acquired the Cracked Rune Tablet and you’ll be able to select “Socket Runes”. This will list all available equipment that has slots unlocked, so select your preferred weapon (or shield) and you’ll get a list of runes you’ve acquired thus far. In the bottom left corner of the screen, it will show you what Rune Types can be equipped with that weapon or shield. Simply select the rune you want to socket, and exit the menu. Runes can be socketed and removed at any time by speaking to Gerlinde, and you won’t lose the rune.
Rune Types¶
While upgrading your weapons, you may notice that each weapon and shield has access to different rune shapes or types. This will restrict what rune you can put on each weapon and shield as you’ll only be able to slot runes that match that specific weapon type. There are four rune types in total, and these are an inverted triangle, a diamond, a star, and a circular shape. Each rune type covers one of the main damage stats in the game which are as follows:
Icon | Type Name | Attribute |
---|---|---|
Circular | Strength | |
Inverted Triangle | Agility | |
Diamond | Radiance | |
Star | Inferno |
How to Get Runes¶
Runes can be acquired by finding them as loot in the world of Mounstead, or drops from specific enemies and/or bosses, although you won’t be able to obtain them as drops until you’ve given Gerlinde the Cracked Rune Tablet. You can further increase your chances of obtaining a rune by performing a grievous strike on an enemy. Furthermore, you can enhance your item discovery stat by equipping the Bountiful Ring, using the Lucky Paw / Charmed Paw consumables, and equipping the Nhelaq Rune on your shield to further increase your chances.
