The Mercenary can be thought of, for Birthright players, as the rough equivalent of the Samurai class, but more balanced with a focus on Skill instead of Speed. The Mercenary is fairly average, with stats that are more or less average across the board, with average skills and growth rates. There seems to be little reason to use one…right?

Well, the fact that the Mercenary is an average sellsword class is the reason it’s good. It’s a tried-and-true sort of class, with no gimmicks or niche mechanics, and even better the Mercenary gets access to a great promotion in the form of Hero.
