Magic has been criminalized in Novigrad, thanks to the Redanian-supported Witch Hunters, and its practitioners and if their oppressors get their way, both will be consigned to the pyre. Whatever superstitions plague the city, however, magic remains useful, as do the talents of its practitioners, and the magical crackdown has made the trafficking of now-illicit magical contraband very lucrative on the black market. This page will provide a walkthrough for the secondary quest Novigrad, Closed City in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Quest Objectives¶
Starting Novigrad, Closed City¶
To start this quest you must first complete the secondary quest A Matter of Life and Death, in the aftermath of which the Witch Hunters in Novigrad will intensify their crack down on mages. You’ll experience this the next time you try to enter the city via one of its gates, as a pass is now required to get inside. Sigi Reuven will bail you out, securing you the Eternal Fire Letter of Safe Conduct you need to come and go as you please, so this change isn’t a great hindrance for Geralt, but it is a fine way to confirm that these quests should now be available inside the city.
Once the aforementioned conditions are met you can start this quest by finding any one of the three keys required to complete the quest’s objective. There are three locations to do this, so just check out the objectives, below, but the easiest to find is probably Lussi’s key.
Find Lussi’s Key¶
Cross St. Gregory’s Bridge and, provided you stay on the main (central) road you should find a woman named Lussi, who calls out to you, claiming her house is haunted. Agree to help her, then follow her to her house at the northern end of the bridge and when you enter you’ll find yourself beset by a pair of Witch Hunters (Lv11). Put them down and Lussi will offer a disingenuous apology for luring you here to dispose of the Witch Hunters who were pursuing her before offering you her key, claiming you can follow the Witch Hunters to the other two. Loot one of the dead Witch Hunters to find a Warrant which will name the other two key-holders: Fritz, hiding near the Crooked House and Wallter, near the Putrid Grove.
Find Wallter’s Key¶
Wallter is the easiest of these three keys to miss, inasmuch as you might just find a pile of loot in front of a house without a clue as to why it’s there instead of Wallter himself. Wallter can be found pounding on the door of a house south of Crippled Kate’s brothel, which itself is just south across the bridge from The Golden Sturgeon. The house you’re looking for is northwest of Hattori, the master swordsmith, if that helps.
Wallter’s knocking is in vain, however, as Witch Hunters are upon him before he can get away and will kill him with a single stroke… if you let them. Gifted with foresight you can also just draw your sword and attack the Witch Hunters (Lv12) before they reach Wallter, if you wish. Preemptively killing the Witch Hunters will save him (they approach from the east, by the way) but it doesn’t really matter as far as this quest goes - either loot the Key off Wallter’s corpse or talk to him after killing the Witch Hunters and he’ll hand it over. If you kill the Witch Hunters (you can attack them after they kill Wallter, if you wish) they’ll drop another Warrant, which contains the same info as the warrants carried by Lussi’s pursuers.
Find Fritz’s Key¶
Fritz is holed up in a house east of Triss’s hideout, not the adjacent building, but the one after the adjacent building. Go up the stairs and investigate the body on the ground to determine that the Witch Hunters beat you to the punch. Head upstairs and keep your Witcher senses active as you ascend to spot some hand prints on a wooden beam. Ignite the torch near the hand prints and a secret door will open. Enter the hidden chamber and search the desk to find Fritz’s key and a Letter About Treasure. The obliviousness of the Witch Hunters will benefit you, as with all three keys you can loot the dresser to the south to find the treasure: a Svarog Runestone, a Dark Steel Plate, a Pig Hide, Glowing Ore and 2x Steel Ingots. Rather pedestrian reward for such secrecy. Once you open the dresser the quest will end.
