Tap into the unbridled power of the autophage! Rage/Berserk modes aren’t exactly novel concepts in gaming, and Dead Island 2 further wears down well-trodden ground with Fury Mode. This page will discuss how to unlock Fury Mode, how to activate Fury Mode, what boons you gain while in Fury Mode, how to fill the Fury Meter, and some useful build tips.
How to Unlock Fury Mode in Dead Island 2¶
You’ll unlock Fury Mode during the story quest The Red Mist, after finding yourself put in dire straits by a mysterious interloper. Both the danger of the situation you find yourself in and the… environment’s unseemly appeal to your latent autophage infection serve as catalysts to a dire transformation. After your first Fury Mode transformation, you can enter Fury Mode at will any time thereafter, assuming your Fury Meter is full.
How to Use Fury Mode in Dead Island 2¶
After your first, story-mandated use of Fury Mode you can enter Fury Mode again any time your Fury Meter is full by pressing the + buttons. By default you gain Fury by killing zombies and by performing Counter Attacks, which is of limited utility against most bosses and apex variants, especially if your Fury Meter isn’t charged at the outset of combat. That said, most encounters have adds, allowing you to pick off weaker zombies to charge your Fury Meter. Equipping various Skill Cards in the Fury Skill Slot also alter the way you generate Fury:
Skill Card | Effect |
---|---|
Blood Rush | Slay zombies and perform COUNTER attacks to build FURY. |
Served Cold | BLOCK attacks or take damage from zombies to build FURY. |
Street Brawler | Damage zombies with melee attacks or weapon throws to build FURY. But stick with it – your FURY METER will slowly drain unless it’s full. |
Surgical Focus | MAIM zombies to build FURY. But don’t lose focus – taking damage will drain FURY. |
While in Fury Mode you’ll gain numerous boons, including:
- Nearby enemies will be knocked back
- A moderate Health boost when you enter Fury Mode
- Minor Health recovery every time you strike an enemy
- Increased Damage and Force
Essentially you become a more durable juggernaut of destruction, but you’re not invulnerable, so you should still endeavor to avoid the worst the enemy throws at you, and abstain from standing around in puddles of burning oil and the like. Since you’ll gain a burst of healing when you enter Fury Mode and will regain more Health the more you land strikes in Fury Mode, it’s a good desperation move, or a way to deal with nuisance enemies quickly (looking at you, Butchers). Your Fury Meter will deplete while you’re in Fury Mode, and every attack will also consume a set amount of Fury. Some Skill Cards will deplete more Fury than others, especially Fury Special Attacks. You will be forced out of Fury Mode if your Fury Meter depletes, but you can also electively exit Fury Mode (albeit with a minor added Fury cost) by pressing + again.
Fury Special Skills¶
While in Fury Mode, you can utilize various Fury Special Attacks modeled on the powers of various Apex zombies you’ve encountered. What Fury Special Attack Skill Card you have equipped determines what ability you’ll use. These replace Curveballs, which cannot be used while in Fury Mode:
Skill Card | Effect |
---|---|
Overhead Smash | Press / in FURY MODE to let loose an unleash a POWERFUL ground smash. |
Scream | Press Press / in FURY MODE to emit a piercing wail that WEAKENS nearby zombies. |
Spitting Cobra | Hold / in FURY MODE to vomit CAUSTIC bile on unsuspecting enemies. |
Fury Mode Build Tips¶
Fury Mode is generally a supplemental ability for use under duress, but certain builds are capable of using Fury Mode more regularly - perhaps not to the point of being a primary way of dispatching enemies, but often enough to be a major component in such builds. Specifically, [Maiming Builds] that make use of Maiming Weapons (ideally katanas) modded and upgraded to improve Critical Damage and Limb Damage along with the Surgical Focus Skill Card can recharge their Fury exceptionally quickly by just swinging at zombie legs. Taking damage will reduce your Fury, but the tradeoff is nowhere near fair - you’ll gain significant Fury every time you maim an enemy and lose a trickle when you take hits. This allows you to build up Fury incredibly quickly, ensuring you usually have enough Fury to enter Fury Mode when you need to.
Add in the Ravenous Skill Card (In FURY MODE, slay zombies to replenish your FURY and stay enraged longer.) and you’ll remain in FURY MODE longer - perhaps indefinitely, if you keep killing. And for the cherry on top, add in the Short Fuse Skill Card, which allows you to Unleash FURY MODE anytime once your FURY METER is more than half full.. Filling up half your Fury Meter is a matter of cutting off several limbs - a pair of weaker zombies will get you there in a few swings, making this quite a powerful combo. You can also use the Janus Rage skill card (When your FURY METER is full, get a moderate boost to TOUGHNESS. When it isn’t full, get a minor boost to DAMAGE.) which will give you buffs regardless of how full your Fury Meter is.
