This page offers a guide on how to beat the Reubenator in Dead Island 2. This is the final boss of the main story and you’ll encounter him during the Hollywood Ending quest in Hollywood Boulevard.
How to Defeat the Final Boss in Dead Island 2¶
The Reubenator is a bit like a mix of other apex enemies in one. He can slam the ground like a Crusher, he looks a bit like a Mutator and can spit out spikey bones at you from far away, and he also has a long sharpened forearm bone that he will stab at you with like a Butcher zombie.
He is also very tanky, but thankfully quite slow too. Unfortunately the boss fight area is quite small so you’ll constantly need to be on the move. We found that the easiest way to deal with Reubenator was to continually keep him at long range and use your most powerful guns to shoot him. Curveballs like Military Grenades (unlocked by completing Boz makes a Bang) and other bombs can also prove very effective. Not only for dealing damage to Reubenator, but also for dealing with the horde of zombies that are continually going to respawn in this fight.
The Reubenator himself is not that difficult to deal with so long as you keep him at a distance. However, combine this OP zombie with a cramped boss arena and a ton of different zombie types and you’ve got yourself a tough final boss fight!
Guns are definitely your best bet against the Reubenator, but you will want to preserve your ammo by switching to your strongest melee weapons when you’ve run to the other side of the room to deal with some of the extra zombies. Coming stacked with max ammo will mean you can make quick work of this guy though!
One of the first apex zombie types to come into this fight will be a Screamer. The Reubenator will smash one of the tubes in the room and out pops a Screamer. Naturally in this tiny room a Screamer is less than idea. We’d recommend dealing with it asap by shooting it quickly or wait a few seconds until there’s lots of zombies nearby and then activate Fury mode (if you have it) to slice up loads of enemies including the Screamer.
You definitely want to be using Fury strategically during this fight to get rid of loads of ads as well as getting in a few good swipes on the Reubenator too. He doesn’t heal so unlike Butchers you can be safe in knowing the damaged HP bar will stay put!
After you’ve damaged the Reubenator to around below half health, two Crushers will be spawned in as well as some Riot Gear Zombies that are harder to damage with bladed weapons. The Reubenator actually frequently kills off other lesser zombies by accident so you can just keep on running in circles and throwing curveballs at the extra zombies and shooting at him whilst dealing with any immediate threats in your path.
As you make your way through the fight, you will have to deal with more environmental challenges like fire bursting from the walls, and the Crushers’ slam down attacks (and the Reubenator’s) will be quite hard to avoid in this small space. Luckily, you’ll find that there are loads of medkits on the floor as well as ammo, food and energy drinks so you can frantically try to pick them up as you run around the room. If you can help it, try not to have your health below 50% when you’re running around, because if you get caught in an explosion, fire or a slam down attack then you’re pretty much gonna get KO’d.
It doesn’t feel like a particularly bad-ass strategy but constantly kiting the Reubenator is definitely the best method as his melee attacks are pretty devastating and it can be hard to recover if you fall over near him as all the zombies will just converge on you pretty quickly.
Once you’ve killed the Reubenator you will instantly collapse and there’ll be no need to deal with the rest of the zombies! As with a lot of the other boss fights, this is a test in multitasking and enemy management: you need to kill the Reubenator but you also can’t completely neglect the zombies around as it’ll make the fight very difficult and you’ll likely get overwhelmed.
For killing the Reubenator, you’ll earn a new Numen slot in your Skills tab!
