Strategy¶
The Catoblepas can be a difficult Area Creation, especially for a party that hasn’t dived into the Sphere Grid too much. If you’re familiar with the Behemoth King, then you pretty much know how the Catoblepas will function. It has a normal attack, as well as a move called Pop Fly, which functions similar to the Heave move the other Behemoths do. It can also use Flare on a single party member, which can be decently powerful, as the Catoblepas has nicely rounded stats across the board. Once you defeat the creature, it will resort to using Ultima as a final attacks, which is the biggest problem with this fiend.
Since One-Eye is an extremely easy Creation to defeat, you could continually kill it to earn Magic Defense Spheres, which can be helpful in lessening the damage from Ultima. A high Magic Defense, along with Shell, will definitely help there. You will also want to have Protect on everyone, too. Catoblepas is vulnerable to the various Breaks, although it resists them a little bit. Of course, Auron’s Banishing Blade Overdrive can inflict all of them at once, which can help a bit with the damage being done, especially when combining with Protect/Shell. If all else fails, you can simply cast Auto-Life or use one of Rikku’s Mixes for the status to survive Ultima.
