• Killer Bee
• Ragora

Strategy¶

The Malboro Menace will always ambush the party and its first attack will be Putrid Breath. If you have First Strike on a character’s weapon (like Auron’s Celestial), then you will be able to act before it. You could use this opportunity to switch in Yuna and have her summon an Aeon, although this will just delay its use of Putrid Breath until it can use it on your party. Putrid Breath does damage, while also inflicting Silence, Darkness, Slow, Poison and Confuse. That last one is the biggest problem, so if you can get Confuseproof on your characters, you should be fine and have full control of them after the move.

Other moves that the Malboro uses include Chow Time, where it will chew on a party member, before spitting them out; this does a good bit of damage and will inflict Full Break on them. Mega Gastric Juice hits a single character and inflicts Full Break on them, also. Lastly, Gastric Juice Blast hits the entire party and has a chance to inflict Petrification, so in addition to Confuseproof, you will also want Stoneproof on your characters, in case (Stone Ward might suffice). Note that the boss will not use Putrid Breath again until it’s been targeted seven times, so you can keep track of it.

Summoning a powerful Aeon, especially if Yuna’s been built up, is ideal for this fight. The Malboro will not use Chow Time and Putrid Breath against Aeons, and they cannot be hit with the petrify from Gastric Juice Blast. The way to do it is have someone else with First Strike call in Yuna before the boss can use its signature attack. If you’re doing 99,999 damage per hit, then you will finish off the fiend before it has a chance to use Putrid Breath a second time. Dispel is a great skill to have on at least one person here, because of the Full Break statuses.
