Bravely Second: End Layer

Using Special Moves

By
Vincent Lau

Use Special Moves to land a decisive blow on the enemy!

During those difficult boss battles, when normal moves aren’t cool enough, it’s time to bust open those Special Moves! As you can imagine, Special Moves are powerful moves with the potential to turn the battle towards your favour.

The Special Moves available depend on the characters’ equipped weapon(s) and how far you’ve reconstructed the Fort-Lune Special R&D Labs. For example, if you have a sword equipped, you’ll be able to use the Level 1 Special Move “Hack and Slash”.

Using Special Moves

Because Special Moves are, well, special , you can’t just use them all the time. Instead, you must first satisfy the trigger conditions in battle. For example, to use a Level 1 Special Move, you must Brave a total of 10 times. You can view–and even modify–trigger conditions from the Special menu.

Once you’ve satisfied the condition, the Special command will appear in your character’s list of commands. You may also notice the command blinking–the faster it blinks, the higher the level of the Special Moves you have access to. From there, you can choose one of the character’s Special Moves.

Afterwards, your character use the Special Move when their turn arrives. Special Moves have a variety of effects–most of them deal powerful damage to the enemy, while some heal your party or weaken the enemy.

Because Special Moves are standard actions, you can unleash multiple during one turn and/or use them in combination with Brave. However, once a particular character has used a Special Move, they won’t be able to use another one until they’ve satisfied the trigger condition again.

Music to Your Ears

After using a Special Move, the battle music will suddenly change; for the duration of the Special Move music, your party will receive a buff to their stats, dependent on the Special Move.

Ideally, you’ll want to give commands quickly to make the most of your buffs; some of the buffs are pretty amazing and can turn the tide of battle in their own right.

You can also chain together Special Moves to prolong the music–when you think the music’s about to end, quickly use another Special Move to keep the music going!

Finally, when you’re fresh out of Special Moves, you could turn to friend summons for help–summons can use Special Moves too and their Special Moves will trigger the morale-boosting music just like your own.
