At the end of Chapter 3 in the main story of the Resident Evil 4 Remake, you’ll be forced into a boss fight with the Del Lago Lake Monster. This fight will be different from all of the others you’ve experienced so far in the story, since you won’t have access to your usual set of weapons. Instead, you’ll need to use harpoons to inflict damage to the boss, and you can unlock the In Tune with the Harpoon challenge if you hit every shot on target with the harpoon.

As you’re travelling across the lake on the speed boat, a cutscene will begin during which Leon is attacked by the lake monster. By the end of it, you’ll find yourself being pulled along by the monster and you only have one choice: to throw as many harpoons into its body as possible. You’ll need to aim while accounting for the velocity of the harpoon in relation to where the monster is, so keep in mind that it’s generally best to overshoot your aim if you want to hit it each time.
There are two main phases of this fight which will continue to happen for as long as the lake monster is alive. The first is the one you’re in from the beginning, where the monster is pulling you along through the lake. It will sometimes dip beneath the surface or suddenly change direction as it pulls, so you’ll need to be ready to adjust your aim accordingly.
The second phase occurs when the monster goes under the water for an extended period, before merging again and swimming away from you briefly. At this point you’ll be stationary in the boat, but the monster will soon turn around and begin to charge at you with its mouth open. You’ll need to throw harpoons directly into it to damage the monster in this stage. If the monster reaches you before you inflict enough damage for it to flee, a brief QTE (Quick Time Event) will begin, during which you’ll need to spam the interact button to continually stab the monster until it flees.
If you get this far before killing the lake monster, the cyclical phases of the fight will begin again as the monster starts pulling you around the lake. You just need to make sure that you keep throwing harpoons into it.
How to Unlock the In Tune with the Harpoon Challenge¶
To ensure that you unlock the In Tune with the Harpoon challenge, you can’t afford to miss any of your shots with the harpoon. You need to hit every single shot by throwing it into the lake monster, and you’ll notice that most accurate shots will be confirmed by a blood sprite from the monster. This sounds easier than it actually is, since the monster can dive under the water or change direction at any time, which risks you throwing a harpoon into a body of water where the lake monster was only a split second ago. You need to time your harpoon shots carefully and don’t overly spam them to avoid accidentally throwing one into the water, rather than into the monster.
If you’re not bothered about completing the above challenge, this should be an easy fight that will be over in a few minutes. There’s no real complexity to the fight other than knowing how to throw the harpoons, but you need to make sure that you kill the monster before it destroys your boat, the health of which you can see in the bottom right of the screen. You’ll obtain the Harpoon Hurler trophy upon defeating this boss.
