The Giant Troll, also known as El Gigante, is first encountered towards the end of Chapter 4 in the Resident Evil 4 Remake. This can be a daunting fight initially, but it’s made easier once you know how to avoid the main attacks from the El Gigante. If you rescued the wolf outside of the Village Chief’s Manor at the beginning of Chapter 3, it will make an appearance to help you half way through the fight. We’ll show you how to defeat this boss regardless.
How to Kill the Giant Troll in Chapter 4 - Resident Evil 4 Remake¶
The Giant Troll at the end of Chapter 4 is the first boss fight of its kind in the story so far. Up until this point you will have been fighting only various types of villagers, not enormous monsters capable of smashing you into the ground! There’s no need to worry, though, this boss fight is easier than it may seem, especially if you’ve got help from the wolf that you rescued.
At the beginning of the fight you should equip the most powerful weapon that you have available to you at this point in the story - likely the SR M1903 rifle or W-870 shotgun shotgun - and aim to shoot the troll’s head as much as possible. You won’t have much time before the troll reaches you and starts smashing the ground, so get as many shots in as you can and then quickly run away from it. Each hit from the troll will inflict significant damage, so you can’t afford to be hit too many times. The troll will also knock you to the ground with most of its hits, making you vulnerable to additional attacks before you can get away.
The best way to avoid attacks from the troll is not always to dodge by using the crouch function, but instead to run around the troll and then on the other side of the quarry to create some distance between yourself and the troll. Once you’ve done this, you can resume shooting at its head from afar until it reaches you again. The troll will sometimes perform a charge attack which will allow it to reach you much faster than it otherwise would, so you need to be ready to run to the side just before it hits you.
Shoot the Parasite on the Troll’s Back¶
Throwing grenades (either hand or flash) can be a good way to stagger the troll briefly, giving you time to aim and shoot at its head without having to worry about it attacking you. The stagger effect will only last a relatively short duration though, so be ready to move once you’ve taken advantage of it. After inflicting enough damage to the troll, a parasitic entity will emerge from its back, and you’ll need to start shooting this instead of the head to bring the troll down more quickly. Keep in mind that you won’t be able to stagger the troll with grenades once the parasite has emerged.
After hitting the parasite a few times, the troll will begin to tear some of the nearby structures apart and throw them at you. The best way to avoid these is by running in one direction (either left or right), since a dodge is unlikely to provide enough space between you and the object. As soon as the troll begins throwing structures, the wolf that you saved earlier will arrive to help with the fight (if indeed you did save it!). This will make it much easier as the wolf distracts the troll and inflicts minor damage, giving you more time to focus on hitting the parasite.
Stab the Parasite With a Melee Attack¶
Once you’ve inflicted a sufficient amount of damage to the parasite, the troll will fall on its knees and you’ll have an opportunity to perform a melee attack. This will allow you to jump on the back of the troll and start slashing at the parasite with your knife. You can only do this so many times before the troll throws you off, and you’ll need to start shooting the parasite until it becomes vulnerable again. All you need to do is rinse and repeat these steps until the troll falls.
