Resident Evil 4 Remake offers a plethora of weapons, a total of 29 weapons are there to be had and unless you plan on playing multiple New Game+ you will have to make a choice on what you upgrade and use. There are three SMGs for you to look over before deciding what to go for.
#1 - Chicago Sweeper¶
Much like when you’re thinking about the Best Magnum, you have to take into consideration the post-game unlockable weapons, and the same is true of the SMGs. Seeing a slight rework from the Chicago Typewriter from the original Resident Evil 4, the Chicago Sweeper is still the best SMG in Resident Evil 4 Remake, even if it has been downgraded a little.
Gone are the laser and the high firepower of the Chicago Typewriter, the Sweeper functions very much like the other SMGs in terms of firepower and accuracy. It features the highest firepower of all the SMGs in the remake however, and if you purchase the Exclusive upgrade, you’ll be getting yourself Infinite Ammo, elevating one of the main weaknesses of automatic weapons.
The downside to the Chicago Sweeper is that it’s difficult to unlock, and thus, not available on a first playthrough, and it also takes up a monstrous amount of space in your inventory.
You can obtain the Chicago Sweeper by completing Professional Mode (unlocked by beating the game once) with an A+ Rank.
#2 - TMP¶
There’s not much to choose between the other two SMGs in Resident Evil 4 Remake (one of them new to this remake), and as such, it’s down to looking for which one’s niche fits your playstyle more. The TMP is the first automatic weapon you can get in the game and thus, if you’re looking for that kind of weapon, the TMP is your gun.
Like all SMGs, it will eat through your ammo, but it can be useful in close quarters against a bunch of enemies, especially if you upgrade its firepower a little. As is the nature with an SMG, don’t use this gun from range as the spread will waste the majority of your bullets. If you purchase its Exclusive upgrade, however, it is the most powerful of the two SMGs available on your first playthrough.
The downside to the SMG is that there are usually better alternatives to using it (although this is a problem all SMGs share). It is also the least precise SMG out of the bunch.
You can purchase the TMP in Chapter 3 from the Merchant using money.
#3 - LE 5¶
The LE 5 is an all-new gun created for Resident Evil 4 Remake, and it’s clear to see that it’s designed to fill a very specific niche. It comes later in the game, at Chapter 13, but its main feature, beyond being more accurate, is that it can equip the Biometric Sensor that you can also use on your rifles. This gives you another, faster, alternative to hitting those Parasites on the deadly Regenerators you encounter on the island.
It’s also more powerful than the TMP outside of when you get the TMP’s Exclusive upgrade (which gives it a huge boost to firepower). The LE 5, instead, gains the same Penetration Exclusive upgrade as the Punisher, allowing you to pierce through up to five enemies. If you’re getting swarmed by enemies, busting this out up close can help you mow them all down.
The downside to the LE 5 is that it comes far too late in the game to be of any real use in your first playthrough (Chapter 13), by that point, if you’re an SMG user, the TMP should be maxed out. The rifles also perform the niche of hitting parasites using the Biometric Sensor better than the LE 5 too.
You can obtain the LE 5 in Chapter 13, in the freezer room on the island.
