There are numerous Old Wayshrines to be found throughout the story chapters in the Resident Evil 4 Remake. You’ll first encounter these in the Village Square in Chapter 1, but you won’t be able to open them until you obtain the Old Wayshrine Key. This can be found near the start of Chapter 4, so you’ll need to make sure that you don’t miss it! We’ll show you exactly where to find it on this page.
Location of the Old Wayshrine Key in Chapter 4 - RE4 Remake¶
As you begin Chapter 4 of the main story in the Resident Evil 4 Remake, you’ll find yourself in an old boathouse. There’s only one way out of this to progress through the mission, so just keep following the linear path as you encounter some villagers. These villagers have mutations which make them much tougher, and they’ll often sprout tentacles from their head when you kill them initially. Be ready to shoot them with powerful weapons such as the shotgun to take them out quickly.
After dealing with these new villager enemies, keep following the path through a cave tunnel where you’ll find the elaborate key to the church. This forms part of a puzzle which will require you to explore the river system in the cave which is connected to the lake, which you can read more about on our How to Complete the Church Key Puzzles page. Keep going through this cave system (there’s only one way forward) until you emerge from the other side. Here you’ll see a small structure to your right with a red / pink piece of cloth on it. This marks the location where the Old Wayshrine Key is stored, so all you need to do is loot the box here to obtain it.
How to Open Old Wayshrines in Resident Evil 4 Remake¶
Now that you have the key, you can use it to open all of the Old Wayshrines that you’ve previously seen, so you’ll need to backtrack through the areas that you’ve already explored to find them again. The key can also be used to open any Old Wayshrines that you encounter from now on, so you don’t need to worry about acquiring different keys to open different wayshrines. Each wayshrine will generally provide you with a valuable treasure item, some of which can be imbued with gems before you sell them to increase the profit you can gain.
