How to Catch Bugs¶
To fish, you will first need a net. You will obtain a flimsy net DIY recipe from Nook upon completing his DIY Workshop. You can make the most basic net using five tree branches. Whilst this version does break very easily, tree branches are an infinite material so you won’t have too much trouble making new ones when it breaks.
Head outside, and start scouting out some bugs. You can find butterflies and dragonflies flying around, and then you can also find some bugs on tree trunks. To catch a bug, you’ll need to first equip your net in your inventory. To use the net, you’ll need to press A when nearby an insect. Butterflies and flying insects are more forgiving if you miss them with your net, but if you miss bugs found on trees then they will typically fly away and disappear. For your first few goes, try catching flying bugs.
If you want more precision with your net, you can hold down A and it will slow down your movement and you can take the time to adjust your positioning; this is extra handy for the tree bugs.
Like fish, insects and bugs are seasonal, meaning you can only catch certain species during specific months and seasons. There are also bugs that only appear during daytime hours or at night.
Catching Wasps¶
Be careful when chopping or shaking trees! Sometimes a wasp nest might drop out, and the wasps will sting you. You can catch wasps using your net, but you’ll have to be speedy as you only have a small window to catch the wasps before they hurt you. It is advised that you shake trees before you chop at them, if you don’t want to be stung by wasps. You can shake trees with a net equippped, making catching wasps much easier! You can use medicine to heal a wasp sting, but if you get stung by wasps twice without healing in between then you will faint, causing you to spawn back near your home!
