Description¶
The 2020 Bug-Offs take place on June 27th, July 25th, August 22nd and September 26th in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, they take place on November 21st, December 19th, January 16th and February 20th. Each bug-off is on a Saturday and runs until 6pm.
How to Compete¶
To compete in the Bug-Off, you’ll first have to talk to Flick who will be hanging around the plaza, outside Resident Services.
You can play as many rounds as you wish until 6pm. Each round is 3 minutes long and the aim of the competition is to catch as many bugs as possible. Flick will then give you points depending on how many bugs you catch. You may then use the points to buy bug-related rewards from his collection.
You’ll get bonus points if you catch at least 3 bugs. You get a point for each bug you catch, and then you get 2 extra points for catching at least 3 bugs.
After you’ve finished the contest, you can sell your bugs in the bug cage to Flick. He usually takes bugs for a higher price when he visits your island, so Bug-Off events are great for making a few bells! Be careful not to sell any new bugs that you haven’t donated to Blathers yet.
If you want to play another round, you’ll have to pay 500 bells each time. This isn’t so bad as you’ll make your money back selling the other bugs you catch.
Bug-Related Relics¶
As you collect more points, you’ll be able to redeem them for rewards from Flick. Each reward is worth 10 points and there are thirteen rewards, so you’ll need to earn 130 points if you want to collect all the prizes today!

How to Increase the Amount of Bugs on your Island¶
Planting lots of flower beds near Resident Services will help to boost the amount of butterflies in the area. You want to be attracting as many butterflies as possible since they’re the easiest insect to catch. Bugs on trees are hard to catch because they scare off easily and require precision, so you want to try avoiding having to catch those if at all possible. Also avoid dragonflies too, they’re far too speedy and you’ll waste time running around. You can also chop some trees and leave behind tree stumps for bugs to spawn on.
Before you begin your round, have a scout around the area. You will be able to see how many insects are around and plan your run around. If there aren’t many about, run to the other side of your island and then back again to trigger their spawning.
