With Version 2.0 of Animal Crossing: New Horizons has come some updates that players may skip over. For example, you might not notice the new group stretching activity that can take place outside of the town hall in the plaza.
It’s a long-lost feature from previous games, so those who’re familiar with the franchise as a whole might be happy to see it back for nostalgia’s sake!
What is Group Stretching?¶
Group stretching is an activity that involves you, your villagers, and some residents standing in the plaza taking part in a stretching activity. It’s essentially a minigame that you can choose to activiate anytime.
You can start a group stretch by heading to the town hall and looking for the tape recorder on the right hand side of the door. Interact with it to begin a group stretch.
How Does Group Stretching Work?¶
Group stretching works by having you follow controls to stretch in time with other villagers.
You can choose to use the buttons or motions with your Switch to engage in the stretching. Whichever you do is really up to personal preference, and the game will guide you through what you need to do. The goal is to be in sync with the other villagers and residents.
The game will take you through a variety of different stretches, from simple upwards stretches to swinging your arms in circles. Don’t worry, though, as the controls are pretty easy to follow.
Who Can Participate?¶
When you start a group stretch, a selection of villagers will come to the plaza to join you. It’s also possible to see residents there, such as:
- Timmy and Tommy
- Tom Nook
- Isabelle
- Kapp’n
- Wilbur and Orville
It seems to be completely random who joins each time, so if you’re looking for photo ops with specific residents during a stretch, you might need to initiate a few sessions to get them there. Someone’s gotta stay and look after the town hall!
Are There Rewards for Group Stretching?¶
Perhaps the most disappointing thing about this minigame is actually the lack of rewards. Whether you stretch perfectly in-sync with everyone else or mess up many of the controls, the result is the same: a cute photo, an activity ticked off your list, and nothing to actually show for it.
The only real benefit of doing the group stretching - aside from the cute photo - is that you can earn Nook Miles. Check your challenges in the Nook Miles app every day, because there might be a small reward for participating in a stretch. Since they only take a couple of minutes per session, it’s a quick way to get a couple of hundred miles.
For the most part though, this minigame is purely for the sake of fun and nostalgia.
