Ascension Quest: Side Story - Lanz

By
Ben Chard

This is a guide for the “Side Story - Lanz” Ascension Quest in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. It’ll navigate you through the necessary steps to starting the Quest and upgrading Lanz’s default Class, Heavy Guard.

Side Story - Lanz is the Ascension Quest for Lanz’s Heavy Guard Class.

Lanz seems interested in what the Lost Numbers’ training sessions are like. Go to the City’s training ground.

How to Start the Side Story: Lanz Ascension Quest

If you’ve been paying attention to the Hero Roster in the System menu, you’ll have noticed that there are Ascension Quests in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. Completing these Quests will release the Rank cap on that particular Hero’s Class, allowing you to take it to Rank 20. On top of this, each of the main characters have a side story that will release the Rank cap on their default Classes.

Lanz’s Side Story is one of the first ones you can complete, and you’ll be able to begin it by reaching Chapter 5 in the main story and progressing until obtaining the Boundary and the Castle Beckons Quest. The Info Fragment needed to start this Quest can be easy to miss, as you have no reason to travel back down to the harbor at this stage of the game. Nevertheless, Skip Travel to the Fuller Elevator Landing in the Cadensia Region and you’ll come across the Curious About Training Info Fragment. Head to a Rest Spot and discuss this to begin the Ascension Quest.

How to Complete the Side Story - Lanz Ascension Quest

Head to the Training Ground in the City

Your first task is to appease Lanz’s curiosity on the Lost Numbers’ training regimen so Skip Travel to the City Camp Rest Spot in the City and head to the southwest to reach the area and trigger a scene. Once you regain control, head to Centrilo Parade to trigger another where an alarm will interrupt the conversation.

You’ll find the Training Ground to the southwest of the City.

Make a quick trip to the War Room to learn the cause of it, apparently a cradle transport has been detected and the Lost Numbers mean to liberate it.

Liberate the Cradle

Make your way to Vinisog Holm in Cadensia and use the Boundary and sail to the southwest, you’ll eventually land at Morrack Inlet. Following the scene, head along the path and you’ll reach the point where the Colony has setup. The group decides on a stealthy approach so avoid heading down the center and use the side to reach the back of the ship.

Once they discover it’s all a ruse, Lanz will run into someone from his past, who then attacks the group. Team Garvel is not as tough as you may expect, although if you don’t have the right makeup of your group (at least 2 Tanks/Healers) then you could be overwhelmed by the five soldiers at the start. There are no enemy Healers to worry about, so focus on taking out the easier soldiers out first, then the Levnises and finally Garvel himself who can deal a bit of damage but nothing too serious.

As is too often the case with these operations, a Consul turns up to disrupt the reunion and soon enough, another battle with Moebius awaits!
