This page explains how to obtain Shaymin and change its form in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP).
How to Obtain Oak’s Letter¶
First, your Nintendo Switch must be connected to the Internet. Also, you must be on the latest software version–if you’re connected to the Internet, it will download automatically or you can manually update by hovering over the game icon, pressing and choosing “Software Update”.
Inside the game, open the main menu by pressing when on the field. Select “Mystery Gift” near the bottom-right and then the top option “Get via Internet”. If the Oak’s Letter distribution is happening, it should appear on the next list. After receiving Oak’s Letter, it’ll appear in your Key Items tab.
Shaymin Location¶
To actually get to Shaymin, you must’ve defeated the Pokémon League (in other words, you’re in the postgame) and obtained the National Pokédex (please follow the link for advice).
Once you’ve met these conditions, a new section of Victory Road will be accessible, which leads to Route 224. At the northernmost part of this route, normally there’s nothing you can do. But if you’ve got Oak’s Letter, the man himself–Professor Oak–will be standing near a stone pedestal.
Speak to Oak and input anything you want when asked. A new pathway will open towards the north–the Seabreak Path. Get on your bicycle and shift to the highest gear, then zoom all the way north. The path is very long and will take ages to travel by foot. Finally, you’ll arrive at the Flower Paradise, where Shaymin is found.
How to Catch Shaymin¶
Approach Shaymin and press to trigger a battle.
Mythical Pokémon¶
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Shaymin | 30 |
At such a low Level, Shaymin is fairly easy to deal with. That said, it has a few annoying tendencies.
In terms of moves, Shaymin can use Growth to boost its offensive stats, Magical Leaf for damage, Leech Seed to slowly siphon health from your Pokémon and Synthesis to restore HP.
Outlasting Shaymin isn’t the main concern here, it’s the combination of Synthesis and Leech Seed, which will quickly restore Shaymin’s HP to max, making it a chore to keep weakening.
Luckily there are ways to lessen their effects. Firstly, if possible, field a Grass-type, since they’re immune to Leech Seed. Sceptile is a great pick, because it can learn False Swipe–you can catch high Level Treecko from the Grand Underground, then evolve them.
To deal with Synthesis, you could use Rain Dance to halve the HP restored. Compared to Leech Seed though, Synthesis is less annoying because Shaymin can only use it a few times, whereas Leech Seed will continuously be in effect. Also, for the record, there aren’t any Grass-types that can learn both False Swipe and Rain Dance.
As with any notable Pokémon, aim to lower Shaymin’s HP as much as possible, while applying a status ailment like paralysis. For Poké Balls, you can’t go wrong with Ultra Balls. Timer Balls are good after 10 turns pass. If it’s night time, you could use Dusk Balls too. But if you want a nice-looking ball, try a Nest Ball (but keep in mind the catch rate isn’t very high).
How to Change Shaymin’s Form¶
After grabbing Shaymin, there’s something neat you can do. Whenever you feel like it, return to Floaroma Town. Speak to the lady near the center of town to receive a Gracidea flower. When it’s day time, use this from the Key Items tab to change Shaymin from its Land form to its Sky form.
