This is a walkthrough for Sunyshore City Gym in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP).

That electricity does not look safe at all… (left), Fortunately, the main focus of this gym is the rotating gear platforms. (right)

The Sunyshore City Gym is Volkner’s pride and joy: a mechanical-themed building with rotating gear platforms and live electricity flying around. We’re not sure how it passed health and safety…

How to Reach the Gym Leader

Room 1

In the first chamber, go up and walk along the bridge atop the big circular cog, then turn right and step on the green circular button in the center of the next cog. This will cause all the cogs to rotate 90 degrees clockwise or anti-clockwise, depending on their position.

(1 of 2) Each time you step on these circular buttons…

Each time you step on these circular buttons… (left), …The gears will rotate 90 degrees. (right)

Go down back near the entrance, then walk along the bridge on the first cog again, which now points to the left. Step on the green button on the left. The cogs will rotate once more. Now go right and up to reach the other side. You’ll need to fight a trainer to continue.

Room 2

In the second room, head up and step on the blue circular button on the left-hand side cog. After the cogs rotate, you’ll be stuck. Walk off the button, then step on it again. Then repeat until the bridge you’re on is pointing right. Walk right to the T-shaped bridge, then go down, back near the entrance.

(1 of 2) Initially, you’ll be stuck after stepping on this button.

Initially, you’ll be stuck after stepping on this button. (left), But keep stepping on the button until the bridge is pointing right. (right)

From here, go up the stairs on the left and walk across the bridge on the vertically aligned cog. Go around the corner and battle the next trainer. Afterwards, step on the next blue circular button. After the cogs rotate, go right and step on the nearby green circular button.

Next, go down towards the T-shaped bridge, then head right to face off against a Guitarist. Moving on, go up the nearby stairs and dash across the bridge on the vertical cog on this side. Beyond, there’s a Poké Kid you can fight or go around.

Room 3

In the third and final area, go straight up towards the T-shaped bridge, then step on the red circular button on the right. The cogs will all rotate 180 degrees. Go south back near the entrance, then go along the bridge on the left-hand side cog. Step on the red circular button on the left.

(1 of 2) Meanwhile, stepping on the red buttons…

Meanwhile, stepping on the red buttons… (left), …Makes all the gears rotate 180 degrees. (right)

Now go south and fight your way past the Ace Trainer. Next, go up the stairs near the corner and head across the bridges on the two vertical cogs ahead. Climb up some more stairs, then take out the Guitarist guarding this corner. When the coast’s clear, step on the green circular button on the nearby cog.

The first rotation won’t be helpful, so move off the green button, then step on it again. Now that’s more like it! Go south, then right and around towards the opposite side. Geez, that electricity totally doesn’t look dangerous. Then step on the blue button near the bottom-right corner.

(1 of 2) You’ll need to step on this button a few times…

You’ll need to step on this button a few times… (left), …Until the bridges look like this. (right)

It might not make sense yet, but head north towards the north-east corner of the room. Go down the stairs and battle yet another Ace Trainer. Afterwards, go south along the bridges on the two vertical cogs on this side. Continue down the next set of stairs, back towards the entrance.

If you haven’t figured it out, step on the red circular button north from the first Guitarist–the first one you stepped on, in this room. After the cogs rotate 180 degrees, go back the way you came, up the stairs near the south-east corner and up along the bridges on the vertical cogs.

Once you reach the north-east corner again, you’ll discover that the next bridge will now lead to the Gym Leader! Boy do we have some words about his reckless gym design…
