When we last left off, you should have become best buds with Kubfu. With Mustard’s permission, you can now challenge the Tower of Water or the Tower of Darkness, which will unlock Kubfu’s true potential.
Before heading for your chosen tower, you should Level Up Kubfu to at least Level 30 before defeating the Champion or Level 70 after defeating the Champion. There are numerous ways to do so, such as defeating trainers in the main story or feeding it Exp. Candy from Max Raid Battles (there was also a limited-time Mystery Gift that rewarded 100 large candies).
To the Tower of Darkness¶
If you don’t have a bike that can traverse water, you’ll need to cut through the Forest of Focus again to reach the Training Lowlands (for directions, refer to the second trial, where you had to pick the Max Mushrooms). Or use the flying taxi to instantly travel to the Training Lowlands.
If you end up going through the forest, turn right when you enter the lowlands to find the stairs to Challenge Road. Otherwise, if you used the taxi, turn around and head towards the forest. After going up the slope, turn left. From here, the stairs to Challenge Road should be directly ahead.
Regardless of your route, climb up the stairs until you reach the place where there was a scenic spot. Next, go up the nearby slope on the left. There will be stairs up ahead that lead to the Tower of Darkness. If you go left from the bottom of the stairs, you can find a Muscle Band.
Alternatively, if your bike is capable of traversing water, turn right while at the Soothing Wetlands, and head for Brawler’s Cave. If you recall, this is where a scenic spot was. Get on your bike and go across the river to the other side of the cave. Next, turn right and follow the path as it goes up and around. Eventually you’ll arrive high up on Challenge Road.

From here, go up the slope on the left to find the stairs to the Tower of Darkness. By the way, if you turn right as soon as you exit Brawlers’ Cave, there’s a Metal Coat past the tall grass, along the left side. Also, if you go behind the tower, you can find a TR95 Throat Chop and some Black Glasses.
In any case, speak to the dojo student in front of the tower to begin the trial. Ensure you’re thoroughly prepared because there’s no backing out once you’re inside!
Tower of Darkness¶
Master Dojo Student¶
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Zorua | 23~65 | Dark |
A super-easy foe when it has no Pokémon to hide behind. Knock it silly with Brick Break, Close Combat etc. Just be mindful of Sucker Punch, which lets it go first–but it shouldn’t deal much damage.
Master Dojo Student¶
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Scraggy | 24~66 | Dark/Fighting |
Again, nothing too strenous. Scraggy might be a Fighting-type in addition to Dark, but it won’t affect how much damage you inflict or receive. Hit it with Kubfu’s best Fighting-type move.
Master Dojo Student¶
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Inkay | 25~67 | Dark/Psychic |
Inkay is slightly trickier since it’s part Psychic, so your Fighting-type moves will do neutral damage. Don’t worry about receiving super-effective Psychic damage, as Inkay doesn’t carry any Psychic moves. Stick with Fighting-type moves for STAB.
Master Dojo Student¶
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Krookodile | 26~68 | Ground/Dark |
Finally, a Pokémon that’s evolved. Fighting-type moves are still king, but watch out for Protect, which can waste your PP. This can be annoying if you use Close Combat, but there’s only one more fight after this.
Dojo Master Mustard¶
Pokémon | Level | Type |
---|---|---|
Kubfu | 30~70 | Fighting |
It’s a Kubfu versus Kubfu fight! Hopefully you kept Aerial Ace, as it’s super-effective against Kubfu. But it’s not necessary as even Brick Break does the same amount of damage with STAB. Avoid Close Combat unless your Kubfu is much higher Level than its opponent, because of the Defense drop.
Chances are Mustard’s Kubfu will use Aerial Ace for super-effective damage. However, if you trained your Kubfu well, it should survive with enough HP. Note that if you deal enough damage to one-shot Mustard’s Kubfu (by being super high Level or using Counter), it will survive with its Focus Sash.
Beat up Mustard and you’ll be allowed to read the Scroll of Darkness at the back of the room. This will instantly evolve Kubfu into the Single-Strike Style Urshifu. You’ll also receive Mustard’s League Card. Afterwards, you’ll be automatically taken to the Fields of Honor, outside the Master Dojo.
