Tips¶
With luck, the God-in-Training challenges shouldn’t have “challenged” you at all. Now that you’re a God Magician, you can speak to your master, Jinx, in Hazel’s house to accept the Magician’s Special Request .
For this final challenge, you must slay an eerie Pumpking in Deep Elderwood and bring its Magic Power Orb back to Jinx. To aid you in your task, you can also invite Jinx into your party at any time (during the request or otherwise).
Before setting out on your quest, know that the Pumpking is one of the four strongest bosses in the game and he won’t go down without one helluva fight. As such, we recommend completing all three Ancient Tower trials before contemplating this battle.
Once you think you’re ready, check that your Magic Attack is as high as possible. Ideally you want the Dark Sultan’s Staff from the Al Maajik Goddess Statue, plus the Mysterious equipment from the secret passwords (see the final section of our guide).
Also, bring along Jinx or other similarly powerful allies. If you find you’re seriously struggling, you can even do this battle in multiplayer, although you will need to find high Level players to stand a decent chance.
The Pumpking is usually floating in the open area to the north-west of Deep Elderwood. Before engaging the king, quietly dispose of his nearby lackeys to make the battle less of a hassle.
Also, set your magic type to Fire magic, as the Pumpking is weak to this particular element. His Magic Defence is pretty high, so you want to deal the most damage you can.
Now the Pumpking is really just a Wraith variant, but it’s far stronger than any of the previous ones. At the least, you should know to avoid its swinging claw, which it precedes with a cackle, and pumpkin blast, signalled by the twirling claws.
It may also cackle and teleport around in an erratic fashion, but this is more annoying than deadly. If you’re good, you can step between the pumpkins it shoots out, but you don’t really want to be staring at the Pumpking’s face in the first place.
When the Pumpking hovers in the air and you hear the same sound effect as your HP in critical condition, be prepared for its “Pumpkin Minefield” attack: several pumpkins will apear around the ground near the Pumpking, before exploding.
This attack causes a load of damage, so if you don’t want the “low HP” sound effect to reflect your actual HP, run as soon as you hear the sound or carefully stand inbetween the pumpkins to avoid the blast.
After you bring the Pumpking down to half health, it may cackle while dancing (you’ll know it when you see it), which means it’s about to charge forward while raining pumpkins forward, for crazy amounts of damage. Run and don’t look back.
This battle is really tough, especially if you go in unprepared or underlevelled. But if you’re good on your feet, you should do fine with avoiding most of the Pumpking’s attacks.
