There are a lot of side activities to do while playing Starfield and one of them allows you to romance one of four companions. To get into a relationship though, you will need to complete a special quest when you’ve raised their affinity high enough. In 
Barrett’s case, this quest is called Breach of Contract and focuses on his former husband Ervin. The guide below goes over how to find what mine Ervin worked for and how to collect the evidence at Hephaestus Mine.
Once your affinity is high enough you can start Barrett’s quest, Breach of Contract.
How to Start Breach of Contract¶
Breach of Contract is Barrett’s relationship quest, and it won’t trigger until you build his affinity all the way up. This quest relies heavily on being able to use Digipicks and you will need to have some luck with 
Persuasion to complete it. Once Barrett is ready to give you the mission, he will ask to speak to you about his former husband Ervin again and tell you that he has all his evidence together. This process takes a while, and you will even need to give Barrett some credits to get here quickly.
How to Find The Mine Ervin Worked At¶
Once Barrett gives you the mission, a notification will pop up letting you know that you can’t dismiss him until Breach of Contract if finished. Go ahead and move over to Gagarin in the Alpha Centauri system. Once you land, speak with Barrett outside of your ship to get the details on who you will be speaking to. Once you’re done, head into the city, you will be going to the Yankton Law Offices on the right side of town to speak with Ellie Yankton.
Upon talking with her about your findings she reveals that she still can’t push the case forward. This is due to the fact that there isn’t any concrete evidence to prove that Ervin is innocent. She suggests that you check out Ervin’s apartment, steal a security key, or use your past Argos employment to check the foundry system. Stealing the information is the hardest unless you have a high theft skill and have pickpocketed if your skill is leveled though, then follow the marker to your target to move the quest forward.
If you choose to go the safer route then head to Ervin’s apartment on the other side of town. Once you’re in front of the door Barrett will hand you the key. Use it to proceed inside. You will have a few options here, but both involve accessing Ervin’s computer. For the first option, you simply need to look through the files. For the second you need to get into the safe, this is an advanced-level challenge. Be sure to also grab the cactus near the computer and give it to Barrett for safekeeping.
You will now want to head to Town Hall and access the computer, you will be looking for Ervin’s Hunting License in the terminal. After getting it you can go visit Ellie again, or simply wait until you are done with the next part of the mission to save you some running. You will now head over to the Foundry on the far right side of town, you can view information about what mine Ervin was sent to here, as well as claim one of your former paychecks. Make sure to use the Admin option to get the information you need for the quest. Once you have the name of the mine, head back to your ship and fast-travel to the area. Be sure to take plenty of ammo with you as the area is swarmed with enemies.
How to Find Evidence at Hephaestus Mine¶
Once you reach Hephaestus Mine you will notice that there are several hostile enemies. Several Pests are running around, and there are a couple inside of the building, take them out and head inside. Once you’re done dealing with the indoor Pests, go into the lounge area, there will be a Comms Key on the table. Follow the quest marker to the computer and go through the logs, this will give you more information on what happened with Ervin on the project. There is also a locked door next to the computer, use the key to open it. If you are able to do the advanced lock, then you can automatically get the data from Ervin and Helgi’s research information.
If you can’t get into the computer, then head up the stairs and use the elevator to descend into the mine. Be careful as it’s full of Pests. Follow the first marker to Ervin’s computer and use your Digipick to break in, don’t worry this is an easy puzzle. Afterward, proceed deeper into the mine and use a Digipick to unlock Helgi’s computer. You will now have all the information you need, return to Ellie Yankton. She will tell you that you are almost done with the case, but you will need to find a key witness to testify, in this case, it’s Helgi himself.
You will start tracking Helgi down by visiting doctor Dr. Keala. Once you get your tip from her, be sure to ask to be a character witness for Helgi. You will now need to head to the nearby store to speak with Clint. In order to get information out of Clint you either need to pay him 4,000 Credits or persuade him to tell you what he knows. Once you pay or convince him he will tell you that going to the bar is your best bet as he isn’t on great terms with Helgi. The bar is located below Ervin’s apartment, speak with Lizzy, she will also ask for Credits or you can choose to persuade her. After you are done, she will tell you where Helgi is located.
Follow the marker to the room across from the bar and you will find Helgi sitting inside. When you talk to him you will quickly learn that he’s scared to testify. The only way to get him to agree is to persuade him. Thankfully this is easy to do. Once you have Helgi on your team head back to Ellie Yankton and tell her the news. She will now be able to proceed with the case and clear Ervin’s name, wrapping up Breach of Contract. Barrett will ask to talk to you at this point and you will be able to flirt with him more. At the end of the conversation, you can choose to become his romantic partner or stay as friends. Keep in mind that you can break up with him at any time or even go as far as to marry Barrett.
