There are a lot of random encounters in the game, but few are as intriguing as the Mysterious Captain. This strange ship actually has a purpose once you’ve jumped into New Game + and is a fan-favorite shop. With that being said, there are some things you should know before deciding whether to buy from the Trader or not. The guide below goes over everything you need to know about the Mysterious Captain and their shop.
Who is The Mysterious Captain?¶
The Mysterious Captain is a random encounter that can happen when you grav jump. You may or may not see her on your first playthrough. If you do, then she wishes you luck and then jumps away. She will hail you and briefly speak with you. While she is a Starborn, she will never attack you, although you can open fire on her ship. Even if you do manage to destroy it, she will just be back later according to many player accounts.
Mysterious Captain Shop in New Game +¶
The story changes a bit once you, yourself have become a Starborn and changed universes in New Game +. The Mysterious Captain is still a random encounter, but when you find her this time, she will change her name to Trader and open up a unique shop. While the contents of her shop change every time you find her, she sells high-level gear, weapons, and even legendary items. If you want something from her though, it’s best to buy it when you find her as she likely won’t have it for sale on your next encounter.
There is no solid recipe for making the Mysterious Captain appear. Just keep jumping around until you find her and speak to her when you do. There is a known glitch where she attacks you, either grav jump away or destroy the ship. Don’t worry player reports show that she just comes back so you shouldn’t lose out on too much.
