By
Nathan Garvin

Information and walkthrough for the Third Church of Marika location in Elden Ring, including how to find the Sacred Tear, the Crimson Crystal Tear and the Flask of Wondrous Physick, and how to find the hidden portal to the Beastial Sanctum.

How to Find the Third Church of Marika

The Third Church of Marika is along the northeastern end of Limgrave, bordering Caelid. From the Gatefront Ruins, follow the road southeast. Cross a bridge and when you reach a fork, turn north, ultimately following the trail northeast. The road ends at the church.

How to Complete the Third Church of Marika

There aren’t very many enemies near the Third Church of Marika, the biggest problem will just be reaching your destination in one piece… which in itself isn’t all that difficult. Your biggest threat will likely be the intermittent Kaiden Sellswords and the Troll-drawn carriage convoy along the road southeast of the Gatefront Ruins - keep your distance and you should be fine. There’s another Troll - this time armed with a suitably large sword and not bound to any carriages - up the road to the west of the church. You should be able to just ride by it like all the other foes, however.

Once inside the Third Church of Marika, activate the Third Church of Marika Site of Valor, then continue east to find a bowl containing the Flask of Wondrous Physick. It replenishes much like the Flask of Crimson Tears/Flask of Cerulean Tears, but you can customize its effects by mixing various Crystal Tears while resting at a Site of Grace (just pick the “Mix Wondrous Physick” option).

Speaking of which, head up to the statue to the north to find a Sacred Tear, which will improve your Flask of Crimson Tears/Flask of Cerulean Tears, increasing the amount of HP/FP they heal, respectively. You’ll also find a Crimson Crystal Tear lying about - one of the mixable components you can use to customize the effects of your Flask of Wondrous Physick.

All in all, the Third Church of Marika is basically an easy early-game place to score a bunch of restorative items.

You can find a portal to the Bestial Sanctum in the river north of the Third Church of Marika.

How to Find the Portal to the Beastial Sanctum

While the Third Church of Marika has already been plenty generous, it has one more gift to offer. Exit the church and head north to find a shallow river. Follow the river east and search the foliage along the eastern cliffs. You should spot currents of energy floating through the air leading you towards a stone device with an oculus, within which energy swirls. Interact with it and you’ll be whisked away to the Bestial Sanctum.

Southeast of where you appear you’ll spot a massive winged creature - the Black Blade Kindred. Fortunately, it has its back to you, and it’s willing to ignore you so long as you don’t bother it. This is not a fight you want to pick at an early stage of the game. Instead, head northwest through some double doors and at the end of the hall you’ll find Gurranq, Beast Clergyman. Ignore it, but use the Beastial Sanctum Site of Grace in this hall. You can now travel freely to this far-flung corner of the map and more familiar sites as you please.

Given the difficulty of the enemies here, there’s not a whole lot of exploration you should attempt. Roaming the hills outside of the Beastial Sanctum, however, are Vulgar Militiamen, diminutive humanoids who, while powerful, aren’t insurmountable. They’ll probably kill you in a single hit in the early-game, but they give over 1,000 Runes each, and if you can sneak up on them (their size and the games dreary aesthetic can make it hard to tell where they’re facing) you may be able to weaken them enough to finish them off before they can recover. In the early game, 1,000 Runes is quite a lot - boss fight levels of runes - and the number of Vulgar Militiamen in the area, their low density (you should never have to face more than one at a time) and their ability to be severely wounded by backstabs make this a great early-game farming spot.
