Where is Night’s Cavalry?¶
The Night’s Cavalry can be found near (southwest of) the Castle Morne Rampart Site of Grace on the Weeping Peninsula, albeit only at night. Unlike the Night’s Cavalry in Limgrave, you shouldn’t have to worry about lesser foes getting in your way during this fight, and you can just pass time at the aforementioned Site of Grace to get him to spawn, which will further ensure you have the entirety of the night to defeat him (he may despawn come dawn).
Attacks¶
The Night’s Cavalry has relatively few special attacks, making it one of the most predictable bosses in the early game.
Swipe Attack¶
This is the most common attack that Night’s Cavalry will use - the Nights Cavalry will perform an underhand swipe with its flail, which will likely damage both your an Torrent, should you be mounted at the time. This can be easily avoided if you’re close enough to the boss to strike him first while galloping past him.
The below gif shows the basic swipe attack, which can be avoided by riding close to the Night’s Cavalry and attacking as you pass by.
Leaping Slam¶
This attack consists of the Night’s Cavalry leaping into the air, often over you, and performing an overhand slam with his flail. It can be easily avoided by simply galloping under or away from him.
The below gif shows the leaping attack, and how easy it is to avoid it by riding away from it.
Triple Swing¶
This attack is less common than the others, but it occurs often enough for it to be a problem if you’re not prepared. As he rides the Night’s Cavalry will perform a series of three underhanded swipes with his flail. The first two are slower, wind-up strikes (although they’re still attacks in their own right) that build momentum for a third, more powerful lunging swing. Be prepared for the extra range and ground covered by the third swing and don’t be complacent if you avoid the first two attacks. Fortunately there’s usually plenty of time to create space between you and your foe as he winds up this attack.
Strategy¶
The strategy for Night’s Cavalry is fairly simple and straightforward. If you’re on your Torrent mount, which we’d highly recommend for this fight, you can relentlessly attack the boss by jousting him continuously. So long as you ride towards him on his right side (to the left as you’re facing him), you can avoid most of his attacks and quickly strike as you pass by to inflict a chunk of damage. All you need to do is repeat this process to gradually whittle his health down, and there shouldn’t really be any distractions to prevent you from completing this task at your own pace.
If you’re a little more confident you can dismount and face the boss. Unlike the glaive-bearing versions, this flail-armed foe has inferior range and telegraphs his attacks, making him particularly easy to dodge and punish, especially if you dodge under his swings; most of his flail attacks have trouble striking if you don’t oblige him by standing in front or beside him. Keep in mind, however, that he’ll use a few different attacks against dismounted foes, including an overhand slam attack (much like the Leaping Slam, minus the leap) and he can use his horse to side-swipe you or stomp. The latter is easily dodged and the former deals trivial damage.
Should you manage to defeat his mount, the Night’s Cavalry will find himself momentarily prone. Be sure to take advantage of this - he won’t stay down long and will perform an AoE attack before resummoning his mount and continuing the fight!
Ultimately, the fight is much easier as a jousting contest, using your Torrent mount, so we’d highly recommend using this method to avoid any unnecessary frustration. There will be plenty of time for that with other bosses, so take this for what it’s worth as one of the easiest in the game… even if the Weeping Peninsula foe has higher stats than the one you fought in Limgrave.
The Night’s Cavalry is fairly resistant to most forms of damage, being somewhat vulnerable to physical (thrust) damage and, to a lesser degree, to lightning damage. He’ll drop the Ash of War: Barricade Shield and the Nightrider’s Flail when defeated.
