Where is Magma Wyrm Makar in Liurnia of the Lakes, Elden Ring¶
Magma Wyrm Makar dwells atop the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, along the northeastern end of Liurnia. You’ll have to defeat this boss if you want to ascend to the Atlas Plateau without using the Grand Lift of Dectus.
To reach the Ruin-Strewn Precipice, you’ll need to go through the shallow lake that sprawls across most of Liurnia, working your way to the lake’s northern end until you’re along the cliffs upon which Caria Manor is perched. Find a ravine running northeast and ride up it until you reach the end, where you should find the Ravine-Veiled Village Site of Grace. From here you’ll need to climb some ladders and go through some mines to reach the lift that’ll take you up to the Ruin-Strewn Precipice Site of Grace. From here, continue working your way through the ruins until you find another lift that takes you up to the large chamber where Magma Wyrm Makar prowls.
Attacks - Phase 1¶
If you’ve fought any other Magma Wyrms (the Magma Wyrm in Gael Tunnel, for example), Magma Wyrm Makar’s first phase will be very familiar to you, as it’ll employ all the same attacks while crawling on all fours as other Magma Wyrms. Its offense consists of sword strikes and magma breath, the latter of which will persist on the ground for a while, dealing damage if you come into contact with it. Fortunately the size of the boss arena is large enough to make persistent magma a relatively minor issue. This phase of fight will last until Magma Wyrm Makar is reduced to around 60% of his HP.
Sword Slash¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will rear back with its sword arm and perform a diagonal slash. Very easy to dodge, but it may be performed multiple times in succession, especially if the first slash hits.
Smash and Hook¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will smash the ground with the flat of its blade, and after a brief delay, the dragon will drag the sword back towards itself along the ground. Both the initial flat-blade impact and the hooking drag afterwards can deal damage.
Sword Slam¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will stand upright, grab its sword with both hands, then slam the blade into the ground. Deals massive damage and has moderate AoE.
Magma Belch¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will belch a glob of magma. It will signal this attack by tossing back its head and regurgitating magma, which can be seen in its mouth before spitting it. The magma will stick to the ground for a while, and will burn you if you step in it.
Magma Charge¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will rear its head back and regurgitate magma, after which it’ll stomp forward, spewing magma in front of it as it goes. Has very minor tracking, but leaves a large slick of magma on the ground, which will damage you if you touch it. You can avoid this attack by simply strafing around the dragon.
Magma Over-the-Shoulder Belch¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will look over its shoulder and spew a torrent of magma. It will perform this attack when the player is to the side of the Magma Wyrm. The magma will stick to the ground for a while, and will burn you if you step in it.
Sword Sweep¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will rear back and perform a massive sweep with its sword. Performs this attack when the player is behind or to the side of the Magma Wyrm. Deals massive damage and strikes a wide area.
Attacks - Phase 2¶
After being reduced to around 60% of his HP, Magma Wyrm Makar will stand up and fight upright for the rest of the battle. His attacks are still limited to sword strikes and magma breath, the latter of which is still persistent. Magma Wyrm Makar is more mobile while standing and he has longer range
Standing Magma Charge¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will amble forward gracelessly, spewing magma. He’s considerably slower on two legs than he was with his four-legged charge, and will cover much less distance. He usually ends this attack with a Standing Magma Spew. The magma will stick to the ground for a while, and will burn you if you step in it.
Standing Magma Spew¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will spew magma on the ground in front of him while shaking his head back and forth - less of a proper attack and more of an area denial move, it’ll only hurt you if you’re standing near Magma Wyrm Makar. The magma will stick to the ground for a while, and will burn you if you step in it.
Standing Magma Spit¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will gather magma in his mouth, rear his head over his shoulder, thien spit a stream of magma in an arch in front of him. Unlike his other two magma attacks in this phase, this is a ranged attack. The magma will stick to the ground for a while, and will burn you if you step in it.
Standing Swipe¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will draw his sword back, then swing forward in a wide, sweeping arc. Can strike a wide area, albeit over a moderate range. Magma Wyrm Makar has two variants of this attack, a more horizontal, sweeping version, and a more vertical diagonal slash.
Standing Thrust¶
After a brief pause, Magma Wyrm Makar will lazily thrust his sword forward along the ground. Easily dodged by strafing/rolling.
Spinning Slash¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will roll backwards away from the player, spin in a circle, gaining momentum as he spins before launching forward with his sword. A powerful attack with deceptively long range, avoid it by running/dodging to the left - the same direction that Magma Wyrm Makar starts rolling.
Standing Sword Slam¶
The standing version of his Sword Slam attack, Magma Wyrm Makar will rear back, bringing his sword over his head while holding the weapon with both hands, then slam the blade into the ground. Deals massive damage and has moderate AoE.
Slash and Slam Combo¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will rake his sword along the ground backhanded, raising it up in the air, then slam it down on the ground. Both the backhanded slash and the slam can deal damage.
Double Slash Combo¶
Magma Wyrm Makar will perform two slashes, first a diagonal one, then a vertical one. Relatively little wind up for these attacks, which strike in quick succession. Limited range.
Strategy¶
Magma Wyrm Makar isn’t just statistically superior to other Magma Wyrms, once reduced to around 60% of his HP he’ll stop ambling around on his belly and stand up, gaining an entirely new moveset to attack with. Otherwise, his offense - like that of other Magma Wyrms - can be divided into two categories: sword strikes and breath attacks.
All of its attacks deal moderate to heavy damage, but the size of the arena in which you fight him changes the balance of power a bit. You’ve got so much space to run around in that you’re unlikely to get boxed in by his persistent magma streams (although his Magma Charge attack in phase one can still cover a great deal of ground), making his sword attacks somewhat more concerning this time around. His Sword Sweep, Standing Swipe and Spinning Slash attacks all notably have great range and/or AoE.
Magma Wyrm Makar will start out on all fours, and will fight like any other Magma Wyrm, and if you’ve fought a Magma Wyrm before, you should be familiar with their attacks, which have obvious tells and in an arena this large, are fairly easy to avoid. If you have any ranged attacks you should have little trouble inflicting damage to this lethargic lizard, provided you’re careful.
Once reduced to 60% of his HP, however, Magma Wyrm Makar will stand upright and prosecute the rest of the fight from this vantage. While standing, Magma Wyrm Makar can amble around a bit faster (charging aside) than he could while quadrupedal and is somewhat better at changing direction. Mostly, however, this upright posture makes his various sword strikes more dangerous, as many of them have longer range and/or AoE, and he’s more apt to combat with him. His magma breath suffers somewhat, but given the space you have available, it was already a lesser threat.
Even upright, Magma Wyrm Makar is pretty easy to deal with. His attacks are easy to read, and if you manage to dodge you may have a window to punish the boss, depending on how and where you dodged. He’s faster to reorient while standing as compared to when he’s on all fours, but he’s still sluggish, and if you can flank him you should easily be able to score a few hits. Ranged characters have it even easier, as you can avoid most of Magma Wyrm Makar’s attacks just by not being close, and after he whiffs, get close enough to retaliate and back off.
Magma Wyrm Makar is, like other Magma Wyrms, highly resistant to fire damage. It also has moderate resistances to physical (slash), magic, lightning and holy damage, being only particularly receptive to physical (strike) and physical (pierce) damage.
Defeat the beast and you’ll obtain a Dragon Heart and the Magma Wyrm’s Scalesword.
