This page will detail how to defeat the Forest Ancient boss in God of War Ragnarok.
How to Beat the Forest Ancient Boss in Vanaheim¶
The Forest Ancient boss will be the eighth one fought during the main story, with it just roaming around in an area not far outside of Freyr’s Camp in Vanaheim; this is during The Reckoning main mission. While it is roaming about, it won’t actually attack you, so to get started with this fight, provoke the boss by attacking it first. Those who have played the 2018 God of War game will instantly recognize this boss, which is more of a miniboss than full blown boss.
All of Forest Ancient’s Attacks¶
The following is a list of all of the attacks you will likely see during your bout with the Forest Ancient.
Fiery Projectiles¶
The Forest Ancient will cross its arms, before opening up the core on its chest and firing a series of projectiles at you. These will be in three bursts, but they are easily dodged.
Laser Beam¶
The Forest Ancient will open up the core on its chest (without crossing its arms), then fire a beam from it. There seems to be two variations of this attack, as one is done in a sweeping motion across the battlefield. The other variation will have the beam tracking you the entire time. You can dodge through the sweeping beam, but the tracking beam is a bit harder to completely dodge. As soon as you see it being fired, you want to just keep moving to avoid getting hit.
Ground Shockwave¶
If you spend too much time in melee range of the Forest Ancient, then it will quickly smash the ground with its arms, then deliver a short shockwave around its body. This is unblockable, so it’s best to avoid getting in too close to the boss.
How to Defeat the Forest Ancient¶
If you’ve played the previous God of War game, then you should know how to deal with this boss. The easiest way to fight the Forest Ancient is to wait until it opens up its core, then toss your Leviathan Axe at it. This should do some decent damage at this stage, but the most important part is building up its stun meter. Also, hitting its core will make it drop little orbs on the ground. You can pick up these orbs and toss them at the Forest Ancient to deal a lot more damage/stun to it. Once you fully build up the stun meter, the Ancient will drop to its knees and you can press R3 to initiate a Stun Grab.
While this is happening, you can press either R1 or R2 to deliver some attacks to it and after a set time or so, the Forest Ancient will toss you off and go back to its attacks. Note that at some point during the fight, either after the first stun or if you get the boss’ health to a certain point, a bunch of Legion enemies will spawn. These are annoying, but you should try to avoid even messing with them and focus solely on the Forest Ancient, if you can. It should really only take two staggers to down the Forest Ancient.
