How to Complete the King of the Hill Muspelheim Trial in God of War Ragnarok

The King of the Hill Trial of Muspelheim is arguably one of the most difficult to complete. The basic principle is simple enough: make sure that no enemies are left standing within the spawned circles in the arena by the end of the round when the time runs out. There are three waves to complete during this trial, each one slightly increasing the time you have, while also increasing the number of circles that you need to defend.

As you can tell from the basic information for each wave listed in the table below, the difficulty increases for each one. The difficulty level isn’t only related to the time or number of circles though. You will also be facing increasingly powerful enemies. The first set of enemies will consist entirely of Grims, the second wave will pit you against Draugr combined with Grims, including an elite Ogre, and the third wave will see you facing all of these enemies with the addition of Einherjar.

Wave Time Circles Enemies
1 40 seconds 1 Circle Grims
2 70 seconds 2 Circles Grims, Draugr, and Ogre elite
3 90 seconds 3 Circles Grims, Draugr, and Einherjar

To make this trial easier, you should be focusing on using a high damage build so that you can take out enemies as quickly as possible. This means that you’ll want to increase your base Strength stat by as much as possible, or utilize any other stat that you might have invested the most in (such as Defence) by using Amulet Enchantments which make it so that your damage output is also based on that stat, rather than exclusively with Strength. For example, if you have a build which gives you a lot of Defence but not so much Strength, the Niflheim Enchantment set for the Amulet can give you the ability to increase melee damage based on your Defence stat, but only so long as your health remains above 75%. If you want to learn more about different Enchantments for the Amulet, see our page on that here.

In addition to increasing base damage output based on specific stats, you should also consider using some of the most damaging Light and Heavy Runic Attacks available to you. The Runic Attacks that you choose will be partly based on your own preference, but there are some obvious choices that inflict AoE (Area of Effect) damage to multiple enemies, which can make all the difference when it comes to finishing off a bunch of enemies within or approaching a circle at the last minute. Hel’s Touch is a good example, since it can be executed quickly and it has the ability to knock back all nearby enemies. Njord’s Tempest is another good one which can hit multiple enemies quickly, and there are riskier picks such as Breath of Thamur which inflicts damage over a massive area, but you can’t interrupt the animation once it has started, so you could become locked in at a critical time if you’re not careful.

In the most basic terms, you should aim to use Runic Attacks which can be executed quickly, and which prioritize hitting multiple enemies at once. High damage output is a bonus here, but the main goal with these attacks is to have a way to quickly push enemies out of a circle at the last moment if necessary. Ideally, you should be reserving Runic Attacks only for when you need them most, and keep to killing enemies with regular melee / ranged attack combos as quickly as possible to keep them out of the circles. Keep in mind that you can make use of building up frost with the Leviathan Axe to gradually slow and render enemies immobile, something which is especially useful against elites.

As you progress through the second and third waves of this trial, you’ll need to move between the circle platforms by either grappling over to the other side of the arena to reach the second circle, or jumping down to reach the third, and then back up once you’ve dealt with the enemies down here. This will be a frantic display as you try to keep on top of killing all the enemies quickly, and there may even be an element of luck involved here and there, so don’t be discouraged if you fail a few times at first. It’s fine if you fight enemies within the circles while you have plenty of time left, but if you’re in the last 10 seconds or so, it’s a good idea to goad the remaining enemies out of the circles to ensure that there are none left in them when the time expires. The easiest way to do this is just smashing them with melee hits as you face the closest edge of the circle that you’re in.

(1 of 4) You will only be facing Grims and one circle for the first wave.
