What Are Loot Lizards (aka Burrowing Lizards) in God of War Ragnarok?¶

Loot Lizards (aka Ormr) can be found throughout the realms, appearing a lot like Tatzelwurms (the word Ormr means snake, serpent, wyrm - “Midgardsormr”). Unlike Tatzelwurms, however, Loot Lizards are strict non-combatants. Not only are they passive, but they’ve got a knack for self preservation which compels them to burrow whenever a hulking brute of a god gets too close. They’ll also avoid the Leviathan Axe if you throw it at them from the front, making them elusive targets. While they don’t count as collectibles as far as trophies or completion goes, they do drop useful resources when felled, making them well worth killing.

How to Kill Loot Lizards in God of War Ragnarok¶

If you can’t catch Loot Lizards in melee and you can’t strike them from afar, how do you go about killing them? Well, they can only dodge incoming ranged attacks if they can see them coming, and it turns out their peripheral vision is only passable. If you can get behind, above or to the side of a Loot Lizard, you’ll be able to peg it with the Leviathan Axe.

This isn’t always easy, however, and finding a suitable vantage from which you can strike down a Loot Lizard is often a puzzle in itself. Sometimes you’ll be able to just climb above and/or behind the Loot Lizard, but the further into the game you get, the more complicated these Loot Lizard puzzles will become, often requiring you to use newfound tools and tricks to ambush your prey.

The Loot Lizard on Dragon Beach, for example, just requires you to climb a chain and throw the Leviathan Axe through a hole in the floor, while the Loot Lizard in The Below is more easily dispatched if you ricochet the Leviathan Axe off a twilight stone.

When slain, Loot Lizards will drop various crafting materials (their location determines the drops - late-game Loot Lizards will drop rarer crafting materials) and perhaps the odd healing crystal or rage crystal.

Below you’ll find a list of all the Loot Lizards we’ve currently encountered, with links to the collectibles pages associated with them (where applicable). We’ve also included the key information of where to find and how to kill each of the Loot Lizards on this page. Please refer to this page for the exact strategy for how to kill the lizards, as the collectibles pages linked below may not include the information, since the Loot Lizards don’t technically count as collectibles.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard on Dragon Beach in Svartalfheim¶

To find this Loot Lizard, search under the wooden structure along the northern end of the beach. Along the same structure where the Loot Lizard dwells you’ll find a chain. Climb it to reach an elevated platform, and note the hole in the floor to the left (west). Position yourself so you can see down into the hole and you should find an angle where you can strike at the Loot Lizard’s back - just toss the Leviathan Axe through the hole in the floor to dispatch the beast, then climb down and collect the treasure it drops.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard at Modvitnir’s Rig in Svartalfheim¶

You’ll find a Loot Lizard next to the Lore Marker here. In this case, you’ll need to grapple back to the platform to the north, then turn around to aim at the lizard, as shown in the screenshot below.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard in The Below of Alfheim¶

In the same room as the Rune Reads - Patience Lore (above) you can find a Loot Lizard (Urmr). This elusive critter can be found along the southwestern end of the room, near where you entered. Defeat the Dark Elves, climb the wall to the north, then look back southwest. As long as you’re not on the ground floor, the Loot Lizard should emerge from its hidey-hole. As usual, you need to strike this monster with the Leviathan Axe, but it can’t see the attack coming. Fortunately being up on this ledge should suffice if you aim properly, but you can also ricochet the Leviathan Axe off a twilight stone on the wall opposite the Loot Lizard if you’d prefer a more sure-fire solution.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard in The Burrows of Alfheim¶

This Loot Lizard can be found in The Burrows area of Alfheim, and you need to hit some knots with the Leviathan Axe to access a platform from which you can kill it. You can see exactly how this is done in the screenshot below.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard at the River Delta in Vanaheim¶

You’ll find this Loot Lizard in the River Delta region of Vanaheim, just east of Brok’s Shop. To kill it, you need to hit the poisonous flower which is located just above and to the left of the lizard, as shown in the screenshot below. You’ll need to make sure that you’re far enough away from the lizard so that it doesn’t go underground as you throw the Leviathan Axe at the flower.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard East of The Oarsman on the Lake of Nine in Midgard¶

You’ll find this Loot Lizard just east of The Oarsman on the Lake of Nine in Midgard. To kill it, you’ll first need to break the shields shown in the screenshot below using Sonic Arrows, then go back on the other side to hit the lizard from the ice.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard South of Alfheim Tower on the Lake of Nine in Midgard¶

This Loot Lizard can be found just south and beneath Alfheim Tower, as shown on the map below. The easiest way to kill this one is from the lake, at the angle shown in the screenshot below. You can reach the area to acquire the loot from the top of the tower if you take the snowy path down, but by the time you get there the loot will likely be gone. No need to worry, though - you’ll find the loot in one of the blue chests at either Brok or Sindri’s shop!

There is an alternative way to kill this Loot Lizard by going up the lift of the tower, as shown in the video below.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard Northwest of Tyr’s Temple on the Lake of Nine in Midgard¶

This Loot Lizard can be found in a small area hidden behind an ice block. You’ll need the Draupnir Spear for this. The quickest way to get there is to teleport to the Lake of Nine Mystic Gateway, and head southwest. The ice block will be just to the north of the nearby Raider Fort. When you find it, throw your spear at the ice, and detonate it to reveal an area you can hop into to. Follow the path around, and the Loot Lizard will be at the back. Stand far enough back so you don’t cause it to burrow, and throw your axe at the bomb above its head. This will drop on to the helpless lizard, and all that’ll remain is the loot that it drops.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard Southwest of the Overgrown Tower in The Crater¶

You’ll find this Loot Lizard just southwest of the Mystic Gateway at the Overgrown Tower, in the western part of The Crater. You can only find this one during the night, and as you walk through the caved path it will scurry beneath the ground. All you need to do to kill this one is turn around, step far back enough for it to pop up again, then kill it with a ranged hit using the Draupnir spear.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard South of the Eastern Plains Mystic Gateway in The Crater¶

You can find this loot lizard just south of the Eastern Plains Mystic Gateway, in the northern part of The Crater. To kill it, you should stand on the platform just above the pond to the north, then throw the Draupnir spear at it from this distance. If you try to throw the spear at it from a closer point, it will scurry beneath the ground before the spear lands.

How to Kill the Loot Lizard in the Western Plains of The Crater, Vanaheim¶

This is one of the more simple loot lizards to kill. All you need to do is get behind it and make sure you’re far enough away so that it pops up again, then kill it with a Draupnir Spear throw, as shown in the video below.
