How to Complete the Ring Out Challenge Muspelheim Trial in God of War Ragnarok¶
The Ring Out Challenge is one of the more simple Muspelheim Trials, but it can also be one of the most challenging if you’re not sure how to defeat the enemies. This is because they will constantly regenerate health to the point where it will become practically impossible to kill them with regular light and heavy attacks, or even a combination of high damage Runic Attacks. Instead, you need to kill them by misadventure, which can be achieved in different ways. There are always a total of 21 enemies to defeat each time you do this trial.
The most common and probably the easiest method of killing the enemies in this trial is to knock them into the lava pits. You can do this by using regular combo finishers with the Leviathan Axe, Blades of Chaos, or Draupnir Spear. You can also count on your companions to execute some knock back attacks occasionally, so long as you’ve upgraded their skills sufficiently. Both Atreus and Freya have versions of these, but they won’t execute them frequently enough for you to rely on them exclusively.
Aside from relying on regular attack combo finishers to cast enemies into lava pits, you can also make good use of some Light and Heavy Runic Attacks. For Light Runic Attacks, the Leviathan Axe’s Njord’s Tempest usually results in knocking enemies back far enough for them to land in the pits, and Hel’s Touch has the potential to do the same. For the Blades of Chaos, Flames of Anguish will reliably knock enemies back, as will Cyclone of Chaos. For the Draupnir Spear, Whisper of the World is a good choice, since it allows you to drag a number of enemies towards you before throwing them in a specific direction, and Mountain Splitter can stagger enemies, making them more vulnerable to being knocked or thrown back.
In terms of Heavy Runic Attacks, Tartarus Rage is a good option for launching enemies with the Blades of Chaos, as is Nemean Crush, but you have to be a bit more precise with your timing and positioning to ensure that you hit enemies in just the right way to cast them into the pits. Another slightly less precise option is the Finger of Ruin attack for the Draupnir Spear, which summons a large tornado that casts enemies in all directions. You can’t be certain that enemies will be cast into the pits using this one, but it’s worth a try since it has the potential to throw multiple enemies into the lava pits at the same time, with very little effort required in terms of following up with regular attacks.
In addition to Light and Heavy Runic Attacks, you can also use some of the abilities provided by Relics and Sword Hilts. The most useful of these for this trial is probably the Hilt of Forsbrandr, which grants you the ability to “Push enemies back with force and grant an aura of protection”. The push back effect here is incredibly useful, as it can instantly cast multiple enemies into a lava pit with one use. However, you need to be careful to use this at the correct time, since the effect has a relatively short reach, so you can only use it when multiple enemies are close to you within melee range, and when their backs are turned to a lava pit. You can see an example of this being used in the gif below.
For the most part, casting enemies within melee range into lava pits should be fairly easy once you get the hang of it, but there are also some enemies which will be attacking you from ledges above, where you won’t be able to reach them with melee hits. To kill these enemies, the easiest method is to get close enough so that you can use the ranged attacks of your Blades of Chaos, preferably the heavy ranged attack by pressing while holding . This will allow you to grapple onto the enemy and pull them towards you, either killing them instantly if you inflict enough damage, or drawing them into the lava pit below. Once you’re familiar with how to kill enemies by misadventure in both melee and ranged, the main thing you need to focus on is staying alive for the duration of the trial, so don’t forget to utilize your blocks and parries, alongside dodges and rolls, where necessary.
