For most of the long, storied history of Dungeons and Dragons, warriors were somewhat… limited in combat. Other classes gained access to skill, spells and class abilities, but the Fighter was pretty much relegated to the standard Attack Rolls from the beginning of a Fighter’s career until the end. Thankfully, the monotony has been broken up somewhat in Baldur’s Gate 3 with the inclusion of Weapon Actions, which will be discussed on this page.
What Are Weapon Actions in Baldur’s Gate 3?¶
Every weapon has one or more Weapon Actions available for use. As long as a character is Proficienct with an equipped weapon, they will have access to that weapon’s Weapon Actions. For example, warhammers have the Bonebreaker, Concussive Smash and Weakening Strike Weapon Actions, and greatswords have the Pommel Strike, Lacerate and Cleave Weapon Actions. You can see what Weapon Actions a weapon has by hovering over said weapon until the info box appears. Any usable Weapon Actions will be added to your action bar when equipped.
How to Use Weapon Actions in Baldur’s Gate 3¶
Like any other class ability, spell or command, Weapon Actions will appear in the action bar at the bottom of the screen, generally being orange-colored icons. Like spells, the range, radius and effects of Weapon Actions may vary considerably, often sacrificing damage for an AoE or some sort of debilitating effect. Most Weapon Actions consume an Action to perform in combat, although some, like Pommel Strike, only use a Free Action, so check what Weapon Actions your weapons have so you can best make use of them.
Weapon Actions typically recharge after taking a Short Rest, making them something of a limited commodity in combat. Your enemies will not be shy about using them, however, and neither should you be. It’s entirely possible for you to swap between weapons just to make use of the different Weapon Actions each weapon offers, but keep in mind that each Weapon Action has the same cooldown, regardless of the source. If you use the Pommel Strike Weapon Action with a longsword and then equip a greatsword, you won’t be able to use the greatsword’s Pommel Strike Weapon Action.
