Baldur's Gate 3 - Grymforge Boss Walkthrough

By
Craig Robinson

Grym is your giant mechanical construct, which guards the Adamantine Forge at the end of the "Grymforge" iconGrymforge questline. This will likely be one of the first main bosses you can encounter. Unlike most bosses you’ve encountered so far, this one has tactics you need to use to beat the boss. Otherwise, this oversized pseudo-warforge will bonk you into a mould. Here is a walkthrough on how to defeat the Grymforge Boss in Baldur’s Gate 3

How to Beat Grym in Baldur’s Gate 3

(1 of 2) Have one character at the lava wheel, another at the lever, and one at the mould spot to use as bait. Position your fourth character alongside the level or the mould character and use them as support, depending on your party setup.

Have one character at the lava wheel, another at the lever, and one at the mould spot to use as bait. Position your fourth character alongside the level or the mould character and use them as support, depending on your party setup. (left), Once the room is filled with lava, bait the boss over to the hammer and anvil, and have your lever character deal lots of damage. (right)

To start the boss encounter, you must have activated the Adamantine Forge, inserted the moulds, pulled the levers and gone down to the lava floor. Now, the only thing left to do is to pull the lava wheel and start the fight. But, before you do that, you need to do the following:

  • Have at least one party member stood on top of the mould injector
  • Have ideally, two characters stood next to the hammer lever
  • Have one character stand at the lava lever. You have another character at the lever and it is fine, but they are more at risk of suffering from AOE effects, and potentially collateral damage from the Hammer. But, certain compositions can support it nonetheless.

When the boss arrives, you will need the character to stand on the mould to get the boss’s attention. The boss has a built in aggro system, where the character that does the most damage will become the Prime Target, and the boss will path to their location. The most ideal situation is the character on the anvil is the first person to get the aggro. Hopefully, their initiative is first, so they can use ranged attacks or spells to hit the boss with. If not, the boss’s aggro defaults to the character that opened the lava valve.

Once the boss is on the move, you need to make sure you have one of the two characters ready at the hammer and anvil lever, and the one at the lava gate using every other action to keep the room’s lava refreshed, as it will recede. Controlling the lava is important, as the boss gets a super-heated armor debuff, which makes it more pervious to damage.

Once the boss is under the hammer and anvil mechanism, you must get a character at the lever to pull it. This will do around 150 damage to the boss and force it prone, it will also make the lever puller the prime target. In addition, local elementals kick-off, and several flying magam critters join the fight against you and the Grym boss.

Now this is where things get interesting. You once again need to maintain the boss’s superheated debuff, and have a character to keep pulling the lever and the magma controls. All the while getting slapped by the irony giant and some wannabee whelplings.

At this point, the boss’s aggro is going to be jumping around the place. And you want to avoid your bait character on the mould from going down, as it makes the fight very awkward. So, we recommend kitting that bait character with some healing potions, or some type of grenade, elixir or skill that can grant stealth if they do get swarmed. You can also have a Cleric support them so they can get picked up wit Healing Touch or some other form of heal so they can still bait the critters and the boss over to the lever, so your party avoids direct confrontation. If the boss’ aggro switches to a critter in the lava, while still being next to the anvil, then you’re having a really lucky run.

Ideally, your party composition should have the lava controller be a ranged or spell caster character, but if it is not, it might not matter too much. This character can be free to range attack any of the whelps to make it more manageable. Once the chaos has calmed down, have your mould character get the boss’s attention again. Dump any strong ranged spells, or poison your ranged weapon and attack the boss. It may take a turn or two. Alternatively, have some character with some form of taunt to get its attention too, such as a Paladin’s Compelled Dual. That’s a 50% chance to taunt the boss over into the lava and onto the anvil for another blasting.

Once it’s back in position, and the lava is flowing, it is time to hit that lever again. Repeat this process around three times to defeat the boss.

While these tactics and tips sound easy enough to implement, The Grymforge boss in Baldur’s Gate 3 is still a challenging boss regardless. This may take you a few tries, even if you know how to beat the boss, as figuring out the best spots for your party composition to take is a challenge. Not to mention figuring out what spells and tricks each of your characters have to handle the situation to do some creative problem-solving when the boss lands that AOE crit and things go south really fast.
