The Mirror of Loss is a feature hidden in the darkest cloister of the Temple of Shar in Baldur’s Gate. If you stumble upon the mirror, you will need to make some checks if you intend on attempting the reap the rewards of the Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate 3. Here’s a closer look at solving this strange device, featuring choices, consequences, and a special interaction for Shadowheart and Selunite Clerics.
How to Use the Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate 3¶
The Mirror of Loss in BG3 requires one of two statements to be true:
- You can successfully pass the Arcana and Religion Check.
- Have the Dark Justiciar Shadowheart playthrough
Both the Arcana and the Religion check require a 25 roll each. You can make this easier by equipping the Warped Headband of Intellect, which is the head piece you can get from the Ogre in the Blighted Village in Act 1. You can also use Guidance to improve you rolls. If you have the Arcana or Religion proficiency, then, it makes the rolls even better. If you fail one, then you cannot get the benefits from the mirror, only the negatives.
On the other hand, if you decided to kill the Nightsong, then, your Shadowheart will likely be a Dark Justiciar. If that’s the case, complete either the Religion or Arcana Check, which will now be a 20 roll to check it. If you’re successful, you can get a special message saying you have already sacrificed enough for the dark lady, and you can go straight to the rewards section.
Once you attempt to make a check, passing it or not, you can offer a part of you to the mirror of loss. Each option represents a different ability score. The options are as follows:
- Offer up memories of your strength - times when you triumphed, thanks to your raw power.
- Give up memories of your youth, when your heart was carefree and your limbs were nimble.
- Relinquish memories of fortitude and well-being, when body and mind held fast against all challenges.
- Surrender valued knowledge gleaned from books, scrolls, and tablets… Words that left a mark on your mind, but no more.
- Let go of some wisdoms that time has bestowed upon you - old wounds, tough lessons, and fond memories alike.
- Give away memories of when your charm stood to you - the applause of the swayed, the smiles of the beguiled, the kisses of the seduced.
You’ll notice that each one represents the same listing order as the ability scores of your character sheet, starting with Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha. Select the option your build needs the least, as the choice will sacrifice two in that ability score.
Mirror of Loss Rewards¶
Now, if you passed the initial checks, you can now receive a reward from the mirror. You can select from the following:
- Claim the strength found in a spirit who has had a fight for her place in the world
- Steal the deft-handed prowess of someone trained in stealth all her life
- Seize the fortitude that lies in a heart denied a thousand times.
- Adopt the curiosity of a young child who hungered for knowledge to her
- Absorb the wisdom of a novice who weathered harsh lessons and harder punishments.
- Embrace the cunning youth who learned to succeed through charm and deceit.
- Once again, the rewards are listed in ability score order: Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, Cha. You will get two more points added to the ability.
On a side note, character who have read the Necromancy of Thay can choose to give up their knowledge on the cursed unholy book. In doing so, you can lose your Speak to undead spell, and the Summon Ghouls that you get from completing the Sorcerer’s Vault puzzle, and finding the Codex in the vaults. However, we don’t recommended doing it, but, the option is there if you want to use it.
Now, once you’re done, you will find that you have +2 in your chosen reward score, and -2 in your offering score. However, you can get this back if you cast Remove Curse. A Cleric has that spell built into their class, and you can find remove curse scrolls, there’s likely one for sale in !Sorcerer’s Sundries. We recommended giving it to your Wizard to learn, and then cast it so you can get rid of the debuff as soon as possible.
And there you have it, you now know all the tidbits, and how to pass the Mirror of Loss in Baldur’s Gate 3.
This must have been updated in a subsequent patch. I passed the religion check for Shadowheart and it said with so much of your memory already given to the mirror you have nothing left to offer, and closed the dialogue.
DJKeterson is wrong you can kill all the Sharans (in Act2+3) not spare Viconia and have Shadowheart worship Selune (in this playthrough without killing Nightsong) and still get the +2 ability bonus (got 22 int on the MC). Just make sure you succeed all the skill checks (25 checks) get the ogre headband (17 Int) Guidance (skill check cantrip) + Enhance Ability (cleric spell) mb Astral Knowledge (Gith) what have you. And prove DJKeterson wrong (i did). Good luck.
I would like to add a very crucial bit to the info here. In a case where you save Nightsong and decide to fight the Shar's followeres in the Chamber of Loss you can't gain anything positive from the mirror. Regardless of the stat you offer, including the successful Religion and Deception checks and your memory being accepted you will always get the same result stating you are not interested in anything the mirror has to offer and you will not be presented with the options to choose a new memory instead.
This holds true even if you decide to spare the Mother Superior aka Viconia DeVir after your fight.
In the end for players who want that +2 stat boost, make sure you side with Shar from the start of your playthrough and kill Nightsong.
