How to Complete Find the Mushroom Picker in Baldur's Gate 3

By
Seren Morgan-Roberts

This page offers a guide on how to complete the quest "Find the Mushroom Picker" iconFind the Mushroom Picker during Act 1 in Baldur’s Gate 3. This is a quest you can pick up in the "Underdark" iconUnderdark and on this page you’ll find all the information you need for finding the Mushroom Picker Baelen Bonecloak and saving him from the Bibberbang mushrooms.

Baelen Bonecloak has gone missing and it’s up to you to find and save him!

How to Start Find the Mushroom Picker

You can either start this mission by finding Baelen Bonecloak the Mushroom Finder naturally whilst exploring, or you can talk to Derryth the vendor found in Myconid Colony, in the north region of the Underdark. She’ll tell you that her husband’s gotten into some trouble whilst mushroom picking, she enlists you to help find him and return him home.

Where to Find Baelen Bonecloak in the Underdark

Baelen Bonecloak can be found in a place called "Dread Hollow" iconDread Hollow in the northwest region of the Underdark Map. It can be quite a treacherous area as there are several bibberbang mushrooms around. If there’s one blocking your path, use a ranged attack to destroy it then wait for the noxious gas to clear before passing through.

Baelen is found in Dread Hollow, in a patch of Bibberbang mushrooms.

To get to the Dread Hollow, head northwest from the "Decrepit Village" iconDecrepit Village (you can go to the Underdark - Beach waypoint). Then, look some knotted roots that you can take down to an alcove beneath the huge tree. You’ll be able to see a huge patch of the Bibberbang mushrooms in the alcove.

As you approach the patch of bibberbang, keep an eye out for Baelen in the back. He’ll tell you to stop moving and reveal that he’s stuck and can’t get out of the patch without setting them off. He mentions that if he could get his bag he has a Scroll of "Misty Step" iconMisty Step that he could use to get out.

How to Save Baelen Bonecloak from the Bibberbang

Misty Step is a handy little Level 2 spell that allows the caster to teleport to an unoccupied space you can see. If you came to the Underdark via the "Defiled Temple" iconDefiled Temple, you may have actually found an Amulet of Misty Step in a chest in True Soul Gut’s bedroom! Having Misty Step will be very handy in helping Baelen here!

The Amulet of Misty Step can come in handy here!

First it’s important you enter into Turn-Based mode so your party don’t follow you and the mushrooms don’t go off immediately. If you have a spellcaster with Misty Step or have equipped the necklace use the spell to teleport yourself to the small opening to the left of Baelen, where you’ll find his backpack on the floor. If you don’t have Misty Step, use a character with a long dash range or if "Lae'zel" iconLae’zel’s in your party, get her to use her special jump ability, Githyanki Psionics: !Jump, to jump a huge distance.

Loot the backpack for two scrolls of misty step and then open your inventory to then select the scroll and throw it to Baelen.

How to Get the Noblestalk Plant

Whilst one of your characters is doing that, use another to make your way to the back right of the room, where you should see a glowing blue plant called Noblestalk. If you’ve used a character with Misty Step, then using Lae’zel’s big jump to reach the plant in the top right - just make sure to position her in the gap between the mushrooms to prevent them from exploding and next turn you can grab the plant.

(1 of 2) Jump over using Lae’zel’s powerful jump ability

At the end of the turn, Baelen will run to the bridge for safety, and you can make sure to get your party members back as well. If you have another level 2 spell slot, cast Misty Step to return, or you can use the second Scroll of Misty Step. And if you sent Lae’zel over to grab the plant, you can pick up the Noblestalk then jump back to safety.

Once everyone’s well away from the Bibberbang, speak to Baelen and he’ll thank you for your help and tell you to speak to his wife, Derryth. He’ll also give you a Scroll of "Invisibility" iconInvisibility for your troubles.

Head back to the Mycanoid Colony and you’ll get to witness Derryth and Baelen speaking. She’s angry that he didn’t manage to get the Noblestalk. You can speak with her to finish up the quest and receive the "Gloves of Uninhibited Kushigo" iconGloves of Uninhibited Kushigo, which grant the wearer an additional 1d4 damage when throwing stuff or using improvised weapons.

Your reward for helping are the Gloves of Uninhibited Kushigo

What to Do with the Noblestalk?

However, if you did manage to get the Noblestalk we recommend talking to Derryth and choosing the dialogue option “This is dangerous territory. You must be down here for a reason”. She’ll mention that Baelen went in search of a Noblestalk plant and you can offer to give her yours. You can choose to give it to her, and she’ll tell you about her shop in Baldur’s Gate called Bonecloak’s that you can visit when you’re next there.

(1 of 2) Ask her why she’s down here and you can give her the Noblestalk

Ask her why she’s down here and you can give her the Noblestalk (left), in return she’ll mention that you can visit her in her shop in Baldur’s Gate. (right)

Although she says she can’t give you money for the Noblestalk, you could intimidate her if you want and she’ll give you a wedding ring worth around 115 gold, but she won’t like you for extorting her.

Give the Noblestalk to Baelen?

If you’d prefer, you could choose to give the noblestalk to Baelen instead, which will cure his memories. When you do this, however, you’ll discover that he’s a mean lil man who isn’t nice to his wife and Derryth is not happy to see that he’s got his senses back.

Baelen doesn’t seem very nice when he’s got his memories back…

Whatever choice you make, don’t forget to check Derryth’s wares before you leave! She has some pretty strong armors, weapons and potions to peruse!
