Baldur's Gate 3 Act 1 Underdark: Map, Entrances, POIs

By
Craig Robinson

The "Underdark" iconUnderdark is one of the main locations in Baldur’s Gate 3 Act 1, with players able to visit here, get around 2 levels, along with some great weapons and armor upgrades. There’s plenty of side content too, with random items, bosses, and other content to explore. if you’re looking for a solid guide to the Underdark, here’s a look at some of the content you can expect to experience. We will show you the full map, annotating where quests go, areas you can visit, and main story progression highlights.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Underdark Map for Act 1

Here is a map detailing all the major quests and landmarks you can visit for the Underdark in BG3.

Now that you’re in the Underdark, it’s time to get familiar with your surroundings. This section of the Underdark is what you will commonly deal with through Act 1. The main quests you’ll find down here, or need to go down here for are noted. We won’t throw all the minor things you can loot, so you can still explore. Otherwise, our quick map graphic will get cluttered very fast.

The main areas of interest are the Selunite Outpost. This is largely due to some chests and gear, along with a portal. There’s some companion-related stuff here with "Shadowheart" iconShadowheart, and partial relations to the Nightsong here too. Further up the road is a Drow sword you can get as well if you perform a religion check on it and draw blood. It’s roughly akin to the Sword of Justice in terms of power. Further north from there is the Zhentarim entrance. This area is typically guarded by two Minotaurs, so do be careful here.

In the upper middle area of the map is the main town. You can get three quests from here. One takes you through the Deep Gnome slaves, which points you towards the "Grymforge" iconGrymforge, per the main storyline, with some nice "Boots of Speed" iconBoots of Speed too. You can also grab the Find the Mushroom picker from the Dwarven Trader, and start the Help Omeluum Investigate the Tadpole quest too. This takes you to the Arcane Tower, an area you want to visit for the quest, and also some other mini-boss battles and some really strong gear.

The main quests we have listed on this page include the Forge a Master Weapon. This quest takes you to a mob-dense area on the far west side of the Underdark. This area is guarded by enemies with around 70 HP, which are big talon-wielding beasts. You’ll need to deal with them as fast as possible, as they call reinforcements to one another. There’s also a crazy man up there too, where you can get some info on the Adamantine Forge.

The other thing worth checking out is the Spectator. This is one big eyeball monster, which grants a very strong amulet from its corpse, and the Drow that wake up also drops some decent gear, and gives you more hints about the Adamantine Forge too.

If you’re ready to do the main storyline, then you can visit the Grymforge. The Grymforge is a separate area of the Underdark, and has its own storyline-related content, mini-boss battles, and side pieces. You can once again get a lot of experience here, find new ways to "Moonrise Towers" iconMoonrise Towers, and more.

How to get to the Underdark in BG3

Alternatively, you can picklock the lever near the moon puzzle, and completely negate the Moon Puzzle in Baldur’s Gate 3.

There are several Underdark entrances in Act 1. The main methods are as follows:

  1. "Defiled Temple" iconDefiled Temple in the "Shattered Sanctum" iconShattered Sanctum
  2. Zhentarim Hideout Elevator
  3. Feather Falling down the hole in the "Whispering Depths" iconWhispering Depths

The first two are your main methods. The Selunite Temple entrance is one you are directed to fairly easily. You will find notes all over the "Goblin Camp" iconGoblin Camp, and you will find out more info on this location via the human hostage the goblins are torturing in the Shattered Sanctum. Once you get your info, head into the Priestess’ room, deal with the Ogre guard, and then travel down the pathway. You will then need to solve the Defiled Temple Moon Puzzle Door. We have a video and guide on how to do that if you’re interested.

Next up is the Zhantarim Hideout. If you manage to sneak through the wolf guarding the mirage, you can either activate the elevator by lockpicking it or stealing a key from a guard. This brings you down into the Underdark via the northeastern tip of the Underdark.

The other method is getting your party to feather fall down from the Whispering Depths. After you beat the Matriarch spider, you can get an investigation check bear the giant hole. Have your party "Feather Fall" iconFeather Fall down there either via learning spell, or using scrolls. If you do it this way, you can slow fall down into the centre of the Underdark. While you’re at the Matriarch, you can get the gem you need for the Necromancy of Thay quest.
