There are a lot of factors that determine a weapon’s efficacy, but between your Proficiencies and the weapon’s enchantment bonus and any supplemental damage added, the choice is usually not that difficult to make. There are some weapons, however, with traits and abilities that make them more desirable than their raw stats would otherwise suggest, and the Unseen Menace is a prime example. This page will cover how to find the Unseen Menace as well as cover its stats and properties in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Unseen Menace Pike Location in Baldur’s Gate 3¶
The Unseen Menace is relatively simple to acquire, on paper, you simply need to head to the Mountain Pass region and visit Creche Y’llek, where you’ll find a merchant named A’jak’nir. She’ll sell you this weapon for around 350 gold - hardly a purse-bursting price point at any point in the game. Reaching her can be something of a chore, especially for lower-level parties. Ideally, you’ll be around level five when you make the attempt, although it’s certainly doable much, much earlier. This merchant also sells the Gloves of Dexterity, and a fuller walkthrough from the Nautiloid crash site at the beginning of Chapter 1 to Creche Y’llek can be found on that page (see the provided link), but we’ll provide some pointers here, nonetheless:
- Travel to the northwestern edge of the first wilderness area. You’ll have to pass through the Blighted Village (you can talk your way past the goblins) and will likely have to defeat some hyenas/gnolls on the road to the north. Bring Lae’zel with you, as she can make the encounter with the Githyanki near the area exit easier to get past.
- In the Mountain Pass region, make your way to a Cable Car Wheel (avoiding the undead on the road to the north) and pass a [Strength 15] check to get it moving, or climb down a nearby cliff and jump some gaps. Either way you’ll reach Rosymorn Monastery.
- Head to the front of the monastery to trigger a scene, then head south from the sealed monastery doors to find a fountain. Go west, south and east from here, climbing down some ledges, jumping a gap and climbing a cliff to reach the eastern side of the monastery. Climb some ruins and destroy a barricade to get into the monastery.
- Go down some stairs to reach Creche Y’llek. Let Lae’zel talk you past the Githyanki guards. Head north, then east to find a waypoint, and at the waypoint head south to find A’jak’nir. Buy or steal the Unseen Menace from her.
Unseen Menace Stats and Uses¶
While the Unseen Menace doesn’t have gamebreaking stats on paper - it’s merely a Pike +1 with properties common to most spears (two-handed, extra reach) with Weapon Actions typical for this class of weapon (Brace, Rush Attack, and Piercing Strike) is has one standout property that makes it one of the better weapons you can get your hands on before Act 3: Invisible Weapon. The Unseen Menace, true to its name, is invisible, and when wielding it the user gains bonuses typically reserved for attacks by invisible characters, namely Advantage on all Attack Rolls. This effectively lets the wielder roll two d20s when attacking and pick the better of the two rolls, and while this is all done under the hood, the effects are plain to see: the wielder will almost never critically miss, will hit much more often and has twice the chance of scoring a critical hit. None of this damage is reflected on the stat sheets, but you’ll notice it well enough in combat. Oh, and as an added boon, you can’t be disarmed while the weapon is invisible.
“While the weapon is invisible” is the rub, and despite the glowing praise for this hidden (literally!) gem, there are some limitations. Namely, if you miss an attack the weapon will cease being invisible for two turns, and once it’s reduced to a mere Pike +1, it’s not all that special. That being the case, it won’t make a tertiary combatant a killer, and in fact, it’s probably wasted on anybody who isn’t a dedicated front-liner. That said, pikes are awesome in Baldur’s Gate 3, especially when paired with the Polearm Master and Sentinel perks. A Warlock can also make this their Pact Weapon in a pinch and instantly turn into a melee terror. Whatever the case, there’s more to this weapon than meets the eye, and its combat performance is far superior to what’s shown on the stat sheet.
