After a long journey into the Shadowlands and finally arriving at the Last Light Inn, you’ll find Alfira and a bunch of other Tieflings have arrived safely at the inn. However, some of the Tieflings have been captured by the Absolute’s forces and are being held prisoner at Moonrise Towers. Alfira will task you with rescuing the Tieflings and this page offers a complete walkthrough on where to find them in Moonrise Towers, how to free them and Alfira’s rewards for helping them out!
How to Start Rescue the Tieflings¶
This is an Act 2 quest, therefore, you’ll need to progress through the game and reach the Shadowlands. You can do this one of two ways, and we’ve got a guide on whether you should take the Underdark route or the Mountain Overpass!
When you arrive at the Last Light Inn, you’ll be able to speak with Alfira and start the Rescue the Tieflings quest, in which she mentions that some of the Tieflings have been captured and imprisoned at Moonrise Towers.
Moonrise Towers is the epicenter of quests and stuff to do in Act 2, you’ll be going to Moonrise Towers regardless of if you want to save the Tieflings or not. However, if you do want to rescue the Tieflings, it’s important that you do it before completing any other Moonrise Tower related quests, especially ones relating to the Infiltrating Moonrise Towers questline, as there will be irreversible consequences that lock you out of completing this quest. You have been warned!
Where to Find the Tieflings in Moonrise Towers¶
If you’ve not reached Moonrise Towers already, you’ll need to acquire a Moon Lantern to make it through the Shadowlands safely. The two main ways to acquire one is to either summon Kar’niss or ambush him with the Harpers and retrieve his lantern. If you do the first option, you’ll need to get your own lantern later on from inside Moonrise Towers as Kar’niss won’t just give you his lantern to keep!
Save Rolan from the Shadows¶
As you walk towards Moonrise Towers, you’ll come across the Tollhouse. But, before the bridge into the Tollhouse you should hear some cries for help coming from the left. If you look down the path, you’ll see Ronan being attacked by Shadow enemies. If you’re not quick he’ll get immediately killed by the Shadows and be turned into a Shadow-Cursed Undead. You need to rush into this fight and take out some of the Shadows quickly, whilst also offering some healing to Rolan so he doesn’t die. The fight shouldn’t be too arduous and the most challenging part is trying to keep him alive, but once you’re in the fight, the Shadows should turn their attention to your party for the most part.
When they’re all defeated, speak with Rolan and he’ll begrudgingly thank you for helping but is angry at himself for being so weak. He too was trying to infiltrate Moonrise Towers to save the Tieflings. After you help him, he’ll return to Last Light Inn and you’ll now be able to experience a wholesome cutscene between him and the Tieflings you’re going to rescue!
Once you’ve infiltrated Moonrise Towers, head to the western portion of the ground floor, and follow the trail of blood leading down a set of stairs. The stairs lead to the Prison. In Prison Cell Four, you’ll find the Tieflings and in Prison Cell Two you’ll find Wulbren and some Gnomes. You’ll need to convince the Tieflings that you’re not their enemy and they’ll get on your side.
Then, speak with Wulbren to discover that the Gnomes have an escape plan in mind - bashing down the wall to escape via an underground dock. They will also help break out the Tieflings too. They just need you to hand over some bludgeoning weapons. All other damage except Force and Bludgeoning won’t do any damage to the wall.
How to Free the Tieflings in Moonrise Towers Prison¶
There are a number of ways to free the Gnomes and the Tieflings, and some of the ways result in fighting all the Prison Guards and the Warden, whilst some methods are a bit sneakier. We’ve written a full guide on all the different methods you could approach this breakout, including being sneaky, using the levers and more.
We opted for giving the gnomes some bludgeoning weapons (hammers, maces etc) and telling them to get smashing, then using Misty Step (either via a spell, scroll or an amulet you can pick up in Priestess Gut’s room) to phase into the Tieflings room to smash the back wall of their cell. The guards will be alerted, but the Tieflings and Gnomes should escape out the back and start proceeding to the boat. They’ll take their turns trying to smash the chains holding the boat.
During this method a fight will break out between your party and The Warden as well as a bunch of pretty powerful prison guard enemies and Scrying Eyes. Make sure to take out the Scrying Eyes as soon as possible as they’ll call for reinforcements and the fight may get unwieldy.
At some point, you might find that (annoyingly) some of the Tieflings and Gnomes might start trying to join the fight by dashing back from the boat to the cells. You want to keep these guys alive at all costs and they don’t do anything useful except throw a few rocks. After a good few turns though, Wulbren will force all the NPCs (even if they’re in the fight) to leave via the boat, regardless of if you’re still fighting or not. If this happens, you can meet them back at the Inn when you’re finished. If you’ve finished the fight or didn’t fight at all, you’ll be able to go on the boat with them back to Last Light Inn.
Alfira’s Reward: Potent Robe¶
Once the Tieflings and Gnomes have fled to safety, return to Last Light Inn and you can first speak with Rolan and Lia to witness their reunion. Then speak with Alfira to receive your reward! Amongst a bunch of gold, potions and scrolls, Alfira will give you a very cool and very rare Potent Robe. The robe offers 10 AC and has the following special abilities:
- Gregarious Caster: Your cantrips deal additional damage equal to your Charisma Modifier.
- Well-Liked and Well-Fortified: At the beginning of the wearer’s turn, the robe activates, granting them temporary hit points equal to their Charisma Modifier.
As you can see, this robe would be incredibly powerful for a spellcaster, especially one who focuses on charisma. We’ll definitely be respecing Gale the !Wizard for this one!
