Baldur's Gate 3

How to Respec in BG3

By
Matt Chard

With the excitement of Baldur’s Gate 3 releasing, you may have rushed through the character creation which has led to you regretting your choices, or you may just want to change your class in general due to it not living up to your expectation of it. Whatever the reason, you’ll be glad to know that Respec is in the game, and you can unlock it early. Read below to find out how.

Open the sarcophagus to find Withers, the friendly undead!

Where Can I Respec in BG3

When you come crashing down on the beach after the prologue, you’ll soon come across the “"Dank Crypt" iconDank Crypt”, a great name I know. There are a few ways to get inside there with the quickest route being through the Ancient Door directly to your north, but this will require you to have a Thieves’ Tool and overcome a DC 20 (Difficulty Class) which can be difficult at this point of the game. Saying that, it can be done.

The Thieves’ Tool can be found in one of the wooden barrels in the sea to the right of the door, but you’ll still need a high-level DEX character to conquer the check. Bear in mind that you can add "Shadowheart" iconShadowheart’s "Guidance" iconGuidance spell as a bonus which will give you +1d4 on top of what you already have. If this is too much for you at this stage of the game, you can still get in there, but you’ll need to take the long way around. Read our Dank Crypt Walkthrough page to find out how.

Whatever path you chose to get there, you’ll soon be in the crypt. You want to navigate through the crypt until you reach the large open room with the “dead” Entombed Scribes on the floor. If you picked the Ancient Door route, the room will be behind the large Heavy Oak doors which need a key to unlock it. You can find the “Engraved Key” for it in the sarcophagus in the center of the same room, but there is a trap on that, so be careful when opening it.

Towards the north of the room is a giant statue, and to the left of it is a hidden button which requires a low perception check. Before you activate the button, make sure you’re healed up, and/or rested as you will start a battle with the so-called dead scribes. This can be a fairly tough battle as most of the enemies have ranged options. If you go into the newly opened room, you can bait the enemies nearer to you.

Guardian of the Tombs

Once the battle is done, there will be another sarcophagus in there, but this one is larger than the rest, and if you read the plaque beneath it, you’ll find out it houses the “Guardian of the Tombs”. Don’t worry about opening it as it won’t start another battle, but it will uncover Withers, a peculiar undead who is not out to hurt you, but help you, and this is exactly who you need to speak to if you want to respec. Interact, and open the sarcophagus, and out will pop Withers who will give you a few options to choose from.

What is the Worth of a Single Mortal’s Life Choice?

(1 of 2) When Withers ask you “What is the Worth of a single mortal’s life question?” All choices will lead to a positive outcome, even if you choose to attack him!

When Withers ask you “What is the Worth of a single mortal’s life question?” All choices will lead to a positive outcome, even if you choose to attack him! (left), Rest in your camp outside, and you’ll find Withers. Talk to him to change your class and respec. He can also revive party members…for a price. (right)

He’ll have a few questions for you, but the most important will be “What is the worth of a single mortal’s life?” Fortunately, you can choose anything you like, and he’ll ask again the same question again. After some testing, the choice doesn’t matter, at least in terms of the respec options, so pick whatever flavor you want, and he’ll tell you that you will meet again. When you rest in your camp outside again, Withers will be there. Head over to him and ask him some questions if you want before he offers you the chance to change your class for 100 gold, you can even get him to revive dead party members.
