Baldur's Gate 3

Rescue the Trapped Man & Dowry Location in Baldur's Gate 3

By
Craig Robinson

For those of you who are participating in the Waukeen Manor storyline, where you can rescue the Grand Duke, you may also encounter another person needing help. On the far west side of the burning manor is a trapped man. You can save this man, and uncover yet another short questline. If you fancy assisting him, here’s how to complete the "Rescue the Trapped Man" iconRescue the Trapped Man quest in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Complete Rescue The Trapped Man in Baldur’s Gate 3

(1 of 2) Break down the broken door, walk into the room, and start the Rescue the Trapped Man quest in Baldur’s Gate 3.

From our experience, the best way to rescue the Trapped Man in Baldur’s Gate 3 is to head inside the building on the west side of Waukeen Manor. Enter the building littered with dead Paladins and Goblins, and enter the somewhat torched building. Now go upstairs, and follow the pathway to the second floor of the Manor.

  • We also recommend doing this before the Rescue the Grand Duke Quest, as the fire takes out the large bedroom you find him in. This could spread depending on how the Grand Duke quest plays out, which may prevent you from getting this quest in the first place.

You should get the quest when you get to the end of the pathway. To rescue the man, you must beat down the door using your weapon. Once that’s free, you can speak to the Trapped Man. When you do so, he will plead for help, and you can either succeed by rolling a Strength or Investigation option. Both require a ten, so, there are fairly good odds you can win this roll. Feel free to use a bonus as well, such as a Giant Elixir for the bonus strength or some other party member’s modifier. Now you know this, you can also plan who you want to speak to the Trapped Man in the debris to get the best odds, as it’s either someone with higher strength or higher intelligence to make the check.

Once the man is free, then you will enter turn-based mode. The fire will spread at every turn and eventually engulf the room in flames if you do not escape in time. Chances are the only character that needs to escape the Trapped Man, is the character that did the freeing. Either way, go through the door you broke down and head back into the room corridor you were previously in to escape it. Once you’re safe, end the turn-based mode and watch as the man’s room succumbs to flame.

Now the man is out, you can speak to him next to the corpse of his lover. He will tell you about their spat, and why it is only him left. The usual. However, the man does inform you of his wife’s Dowry. Now there’s money potentially involved!

Rescue The Trapped Man: Dowry Location in BG3

(1 of 2) You need to make the pathway to the barns less hazardous by creating water patches and removing the fire.

You need to make the pathway to the barns less hazardous by creating water patches and removing the fire. (left), Head inside the barn and check the Hay Bale for the Rescue the Trapped Man ’s Dowry Location. (right)

To find the Trapped Man’s Dowry, you must go down the stairs and leave the building. To the west of the Manor’s main doorway is a pathway that leads to a few barns. However, that pathway is actively burning. You have a few options for this. Use either a Create Water scroll, have "Gale" iconGale learn it and cast it, use "Shadowheart" iconShadowheart as she likely has to Create and Destroy water unlearned, or, grab the water barrel from the building you left and throw it the burning patch and extinguish as much of the fire as you can. Once you have dealt with as much fire as possible, you can now safely navigate through the barn area.

Now, keep your eye on the barn on the side of the pathway, rather than the one at the end of the path. This small barn will have a haystack in the corner of the room. Characters can roll Perception Checks, and doing so, will reveal the Dowry’s location. Have a character interact with the Hay, and you will find a Gilded Chest inside. Now the Chest is visible, loot it, and grab the "Dowry Ring" iconDowry Ring. It is worth around 155 gold, so it is a decent investment if you want to pocket it. But, first, return to the Trapped Man and get the XP at least for completing the quest.

When you return to the formerly trapped, now grieving man, you can now either return the dowry or rub it in his face that it’s now yours. Returning the Dowry can yield some goody points with the goody companions, or, you can pocket it, ruining this man’s life even more, grabbing some extra gold, and getting some baddy points. The option is entirely yours. Either way, once you decide on what happens, you will complete the Rescue the Trapped Man Quest in Baldur’s Gate 3.
