Wizards aren’t known for being particularly stealthy in general, but the mages in Hogwarts Legacy have, through various contrivances, found ways of moving about unseen. This page will cover how to learn the Disillusionment spell, how to brew Invisibility Potions, and with those tools, how to perform stealth takedowns via Petrificus Totalus.
How to Learn Disillusionment in Hogwarts Legacy¶
The cheapest and easiest way to enter stealth is via the Disillusionment spell, which you’ll automatically learn during the main quest Secrets of the Restricted Section, courtesy of Sebastian. You’ll need to put this spell to use by sneaking your way through the beginning part of this quest, but afterwards the spell retains utility, as it can be used to help you sneak past enemies or perform stealth takedowns via the unheralded Petrificus Totalus spell. While Disillusionment can be used at will, at no expense to you, it does have some limitations, chiefly that your concealment isn’t total. Enemies looking at you can still detect you, especially if you’re too close… essentially Disillusionment is the functional equivalent of entering stealth mode in Hogwarts Legacy, save that in this game it actually makes sense that enemies might have trouble seeing you thirty feet away.
How to Get Invisibility Potions in Hogwarts Legacy¶
Invisibility Potions are a substitute for Disillusionment. Unlike the spell, invisibility is absolute, allowing you to shed aggro even from enemies actively pursuing you. On the other hand, its duration is woefully short, making Invisibility Potions more useful as a means of escape rather than a way to set up stealth takedowns.
You can buy potions from J. Pippin’s Potions in Hogsmeade, but each one will set you back 500 - a hefty sum for a moment of invisibility. More sustainably, you can purchase the recipe for Invisibility Potions from the same vendor for 800, which will allow you to brew Invisibility Potions yourself… if you can get the ingredients:
- Leaping Toadstool Caps
- Knotgrass Sprig
- Troll Bogeys
Leaping Toadstool Caps are ubiquitous in forested areas - try going through the Forbidden Forest without picking a dozen of them, it’s impossible. Knotgrass Sprigs are more work, as they require you to purchase Knotgrass Seeds for 350. Fortunately they can be planted in small pots, like the one available to you in the Greenhouse at Hogwarts, so they’re not much fuss to grow after the initial investment. Troll Bogeys are the real limiting factor, at first, as they require you to fell a troll, which aren’t exactly roaming the countryside in force. If you do find a spawn, however, you can get several Troll Bogeys per troll.
All in all, brewing your own Invisibility Potions is a far better use of your money, but for general stealthing you’re best off sticking with Disillusionment.
How to Perform Stealth Takedowns in Hogwarts Legacy¶
Once you’re invisible - or at least under the effects of the Disillusionment spell - you can move around undetected. With invisibility, this freedom is absolute, if incredibly limited. With Disillusionment, the effects are akin to stealth mode in pretty much any third person game you may have played. You’ll crouch down and the enemies will have a hard time spotting you from a distance, and will be completely oblivious if you remain outside their line of sight.
If you manage to sneak up to an enemy’s back undetected, you’ll get a prompt ( / ) to cast Petrificus Totalus, an obscure spell whose sole purpose is facilitating stealth takedowns. Why didn’t you have to learn it like every other spell? Why can’t you cast it without using Disillusionment, first? Why does it only work from behind, on enemies who haven’t detected you? Best not to think about it too much. It dispatches most foes instantly and silently, and effectively removes them from the fight permanently. Other enemies may investigate if they spot fallen comrades, however, so be prepared to move after casting it if you wish to remain undetected.
