Unlocking the Alonzo Follower Bond

When it comes to unlocking Bonds, Alonzo’s is perhaps the toughest one to get off the ground. You can encounter him and his Bond as soon as your first free time in Martira by accepting and completing A Dagger, A Ring, and a Rake Side Quest. The issue is, you’ll need to make sure you have Imagination Rank 2 to be able to start the quest, which can be quite tricky at this early stage of the adventure. If you are short of it, spend some time in the first few free days to try and get it up to Rank 2, it doesn’t take a heavy investment and the easiest method to doing it is by talking to the Mustari NPCs in both Grand Trad and Martira, or by reading the New World Travel Diary on the Gauntlet Runner.

The quest itself requires you to take a two day trip to the south of Martira, so plan your time accordingly. The Abandoned Tomb is a dungeon chock full of mimics, but there’s some great loot to find and in the final chest, you’ll find the item that the Pompous Man (later known as Alonzo) is looking for. Once your return to Martira, hand it over to him to complete the quest and unlock his Bond. Alonzo’s Bond has some decent abilities, but it’s his Rank 7 ability that stands out, allowing you to instantly analyze every enemy save for bosses!

(1 of 2) You will need to hit Imagination Rank 2 before you can accept Alonzo’s Bond Unlock quest.

Alonzo Rank up Events and Abilities

There is a total of eight Rank Up events for Alonzo and as mentioned above, all of them are entirely optional, with the unlock requirement being difficult at the time it becomes available. The table below will detail how to get each Rank for Alonzo and the ability it unlocks.

Rank Conditions Abilities
1 Complete the A Dagger, A Ring, and a Rake Side Quest from 6/29. Requires Imagination Rank 2 Faker Archetype
2 Speak to Alonzo on a free day at night in Brilehaven. Requires Wisdom Rank 3 Faker Enlightenment (decreases MAG cost to study)
3 Speak to Alonzo during the night (after waiting a full free day first) Scion’s Skill (Faker Skill Inheritance Slots to 2)
4 Speak to Alonzo during the night (after waiting a full free day first) Requires Tolerance Rank 3 Magic Shop Negotiator (discounts at magic shops in all cities), Knave’s Loyalty (increases money reward from requests)
5 Speak to Alonzo during the night (after waiting a full free day first) Scion’s Merit (Faker Skill Inheritance Slots to 3)
6 Speak to Alonzo during the day (after waiting a full free day first) Faker Veneration (significantly decreases MAG cost to study)
7 Speak to Alonzo during the night (after waiting a full free day first). Requires Courage Rank 5 Magic Shop Dealmaker (adds rare items to magic shops in cities), Grifter’s Eye (unlocks analyze data for all enemies with certain exceptions)
8 Speak to Alonzo during the night (after waiting a full free day first) from 9/13 Faker Archetype: Elite (Unlocks Trickster), Scion’s Essence (Faker Skill Inheritance Slots to 4)

Alonzo’s Bond is arguably the toughest one to complete in Metaphor: ReFantazio. Not only is the initial unlock fairly tough with its Imagination Requirement, three other ranks in his Bond have Royal Virtue requirements, with each one being a different stat, so you can’t just focus on a single one. Indeed, his Rank 7 event requires you to max out Courage, which is not as hard as it sounds as you will get Courage points from completing Bounties, competing in the Coliseum, and for many quests.

It’s all worth it though, Alonzo has access to some truly fantastic abilities such as increasing the cash reward from all requests, discounts and new items at magic shops but, more importantly, the Grifter’s Eye ability. Once you unlock this, you’ll never have to waste turns in regular battles again trying to discern an enemy’s Weakness, as they’ll all be revealed for you (this doesn’t work for bosses sadly). If you’ve ever got the required Royal Virtue requirements met, be sure to pay Alonzo a visit.

Rank 1 Ability - Faker Archetype

The Faker Archetype is an interesting one and there’s only two Archetypes in the Tree. Its main focus is to debuff your enemy using skills such as Tarunda, Rakunda, and Sukunda. You’ll also get access to Dekaja which is a fantastic skill that removes any debuffs from the entire party, this is one worth inheriting on other Archetypes. Faker’s Roguery is an interesting skill, it has a high MP cost but its main draw is that it has the chance to either remove or add turn icons, it’s a gamble, but can be useful in certain situations.

Rank 2 Ability - Faker Enlightenment

Faker Enlightenment works the same as the other Enlightenment abilities by decreasing the cost of MAG needed to study any of the Faker Archetypes. There are only two Archetypes in this tree, but both are expensive to study and they have some useful skills you may wish to inherit, such as Dekaja.

Rank 3 Ability - Scion’s Skill

Scion’s Skill is the first in the series of Scion abilities that grant you an extra Inheritance Slot. This is very useful for the Faker Archetypes as outside of their debuffing capabilities, they don’t have many other niches they can fill. By inheriting skills, you can give them other roles to perform when their job of debuffing the enemy is already complete.

Rank 4 Abilities - Magic Shop Negotiator and Knave’s Loyalty

Magic Shops are only open at night, but they offer some very useful items such as battle items to inflict elemental weaknesses and some accessories that can resist certain nasty status ailments. With Magic Shop Negotiator, you’ll get a discount at any Magic Shop throughout the Kingdom of Euchronia, nice.

Knave’s Loyalty is a fantastic ability that will see the Reeve you obtain from completing quests rise. There are many side quests to complete in Metaphor: ReFantazio so getting an extra payout from them helps to afford some of the expensive weapons and armor that become available at shops throughout the kingdom.

Rank 5 Ability - Scion’s Merit

The second in the Scion’s series of abilities, this one will give you three Skill Inheritance slots for any Faker Archetype. You can now add some more useful attack skills to your Faker, giving them a chance to chip in with damage while causing mayhem to your enemies.

(1 of 2) Alonzo has many events that require your Royal Virtues to be at a certain rank.

Rank 6 Ability - Faker Veneration

Faker Veneration is the upgrade to Faker Enlightenment, further decreasing the cost of MAG to study these Archetypes. As mentioned above, the two Faker Archetypes are expensive to study, and certain characters such as Junah will need to master this Tree if they want to unlock their exclusive Archetype at the end of the adventure.

Rank 7 Abilities - Magic Shop Dealmaker and Grifter’s Eye

Magic Shop Dealmaker will add new accessories to the Magic Shop with useful applications such as decreasing the turn cost for swapping party members or passing to another ally.

Grifter’s Eye is the best ability in Alonzo’s Bond and one of the best Bond abilities in the game, with its use varying based on how far through the adventure you are. With this, every enemy in the game, with the exception for bosses, will now be fully analyzed when you first encounter them.

Rank 8 Abilities - Faker Archetype: Elite and Scion’s Essence

The Elite Archetype for the Faker Tree is the Trickster, that further gives you access to skills causing status effects to your enemies. More importantly, it gets access to Debilitate, the best debuff in the game, and also gets the Gift MP skill that allows you to transfer 50 MP to another ally, such as a Summoner who has heavy MP usage.

Scion’s Essence is the final Scion skill that increases your Skill Inheritance Slots. With four slots at your disposal, you can really customize the Trickster to be whatever you wish it to be, such as having access to both Dekaja and Debilitate, while maybe throwing some healing skills in there.

There you have it; all of Alonzo’s Bonds and Abilities in Metaphor: ReFantazio. He has some useful abilities such as Knave’s Loyalty to see that you gain more money from requests, but it’s Grifter’s Eye as to why you want to hit Rank 7 as soon as possible, just be prepared for the heavy Royal Virtue investment for this Bond.
