Metaphor: ReFantazio

Commander

By
Echo Apsey

The Commander is another of the basic Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio. Acting as a support/damage class, it can use offensive magic Synthesis Skills and a range of other Skills to inspire allies, push them to the front row to deal more damage, and pack a punch. It is weak to Strike damage, but highly resistant to piercing damage.

Investing in the Commander will allow you to unlock its only advanced forms: the General and the Warlord. The Commander Archetype is a great supporting choice to use alongside some high-damage and healing based Archetypes.

How to unlock the Commander Archetype

The Commander is connected to Bardon who you can befriend in Martira. Following the sequence of the game in Kiregante Castle you can speak to him in Martira to unlock his bond and the class. You will need to spend a small amount of MAG to be able to equip the Commander on yourself and your party members.

Commander Skills

The Commander has access to 7 Skills. Five of these are passive or support-based skills:

  • Enhanced Cooperation - [Hero Passive] Makes enemies more likely to be stunned by support attacks in overworld combat
  • Marakukaja - Increase all allies’ defense for 3 turns (18 MP)
  • Rebellion - Increases critical rate for one ally for 3 turns (4 MP)
  • Fiery Strike - Deals medium physical Fire damage to one enemy. May inflict Burn (10 MP)
  • Formation of Vigor - Moves all allies to the front row, and increases their attack by two ranks for 3 turns (35 MP)
  • Flame Vanguard - Deals medium magic Fire damage to all enemies. May inflict Burn (28 MP)
  • Heartbreak Strategem - Negates one enemy’s Repel Magic and Repel Physical skills (10 MP)

Those support skills are really the bread and butter of the Commander and the skills you want to use as much as possible, with the Fire skills adding some nice variety. You can also add to this list with Skill Inheritance and bring across other elemental affinity Skills or buffs to really enhance the Commander fully.

This allows it to be one of the more flexible Archetypes in the game as it isn’t limited too much. You do just have to watch out for melee attacks as it can leave the Commander quite vulnerable.

Commander Synthesis Skills

The Commander also has access to three different Synthesis Skills depending on your party’s Archetypes:

  • Blusterblast Maneuver - Deals extreme magic Fire damage to all enemies. Decreases their hit/evasion for 3 turns (18 MP) [Allies needed: Mage, Masked Dancer, or Summoner Lineages]
  • Assault Beacon - Increases attack/defense/hit/evasion for all allies for 3 turns (26 MP) [Allies needed: Seeker, Knight, or Commander Lineages]
  • Megido - Deals medium magic Almighty damage to all enemies (15 MP) [Allies needed: Gunner, Faker, or Summoner Lineages]

Both Blusterblast Maneuver and Megido are the highlight skills here, able to deal substantial Fire and Almighty damage for a moderate amount of MP. Additionally, Assault Beacon can help round out your basic support skills by providing a flat buff for your whole party across their attack, defense, hit, and evasion.
