Metaphor: ReFantazio

Fire Dragon Mauna Boss Guide

By
Jarrod Garripoli

As you travel through the Nord Mines in Metaphor: ReFantazio, you will encounter a formidable foe that you normally have to sneak past, as the game doesn’t want you fighting it. That enemy is the Fire Dragon Mauna, which will be sleeping. If you approach it or get seen by one of the lesser enemies in the area, then the dragon will wake up and you’ll be forced to fight it. While the dragon is quite strong, it’s not super strong that you can’t beat it.

Fire Dragon Mauna is an optional boss you can fight in the Nord Mines.

All Fire Dragon Mauna’s Attacks

The dragon will only have three attacks, so there’s not a lot of variety you will see from it.

  • Scratch: The dragon will use one of its claws to scratch a character. On Normal it will probably do around 50 damage.

  • Fireball: Mauna will shoot a fireball at a single character, dealing fire-based damage to them. It does around the same damage as Scratch.

(1 of 3) Scratch is a melee attack that hits a single character.

  • Tail Swipe: The most threatening move, as the dragon will use its tail to strike an entire row of characters (all front or all back). This seems to deal around 60 or so damage to your characters.

Fire Dragon Mauna Boss Strategy

One of the first things you will want to do is make sure none of your characters are the Seeker Archetype, as it’s weak to fire and Fireball will give the dragon more actions. Outside of that, your only other options are either Warrior or Mage. Warrior is can be good for this fight, since they resist fire, but their only damage output will really be their one skill. Mages, on the other hand, can prove to be extremely useful, as they gain Blizz at rank 2, and the dragon is weak to ice.

The ideal setup will be to make all of your characters Mages, and grind them up to rank 2 to get Blizz. Using nothing but that spell on the dragon will guarantee a total of six actions per turn, unless one of your characters happen to miss with it. As far as the dragon’s attacks go, you will want to be careful with healing. The dragon gets two actions per turn and unless it gets a critical, that’s all it will get. You definitely want the dragon to use its two single-target attacks, especially on multiple characters, since it spreads the damage around.

Tail Swipe is the most dangerous move of the whole bunch, as it strikes an entire row for good damage. As an example, you put Grius and the Main Character in the back row, while Strohl is in the front row. If the dragon uses Tail Swipe on the back row, then only the first two characters will be hit by it. The idea with using three Mages is to do Blizz for the first three actions, then use items to heal your characters, if needed, for the second three actions. Otherwise, you would just use Blizz the entire turn.

(1 of 3) The dragon is weak to ice, so having three Mages will make this fight a lot easier.

If you are running low on MP, then you will need to use items to restore some of it, despite them being rare at this point. Once you’ve won the battle, you will receive your abundance of experience, Reeves and other stuff, plus the dragon will drop an Amethyst. Additionally, the dragon was guarding some items, three of which are stuff to sell, but the big ticket item is in the chest. Open it to reveal the Dragon’s Indignation greatsword, which has a whopping 111 attack at this stage of the game.
