The Merchant is another of the basic Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio. However, unlike many of the others, it is wholly unique, using money to perform skills, rather than MP. This makes using the Merchant a costly decision. However, it does allow you to save on MP for healing allies with Skill Inheritance.
It also is focused on assisting the party through non-combative means increasing the effectiveness of your other party members or boosting item drop chances. The Merchant is weak to both Fire and Light damage. This makes is especially vulnerable as it has no resistances either.
Investing in the Merchant will allow you to unlock its only advanced form: the Tycoon. The Merchant Archetype is a risky choice. Most players won’t find it too useful, however specific playstyles or if you don’t plan to use your money much can make the Merchant a viable option.
How to unlock the Merchant Archetype¶
The Merchant class can be unlocked in Grand Trad after you befriend Brigitta. After the initial interaction, you need to reach Wisdom rank 2 and speak to her again. She will task you with completing the A Bullish Embargo side quest and upon finishing that you will open up a bond with her and obtain the Merchant.

Merchant Skills¶
The Merchant Archetype in Metaphor: Refantazio has 5 Skills:
Skill | Effect | Money Cost | Unlocked Rank |
---|---|---|---|
Gold Attack | Deals weak physical Almighty damage to one enemy. High Critical rate. | 500 | Rank 1 |
Lucky Find | [Passive] Increases likelihood of receiving items after battles by 20%. | Rank 2 | |
Trader’s Summit | [Passive] Increases effects of consumables by 1.2x. Increases further if Archetypes of the same Lineage are present. | Rank 5 | |
Fire Dodge | [Passive] Increases evasion against Fire attacks. | Rank 9 | |
Debt Collection | Steals MAG from one enemy. | Rank 20 |
As you can see a lot of these skills are not active ones. The only damage dealing skill here actually is Gold Attack. But, the passives make the Merchant and you can use skill inheritance to bring across some regular elemental damage skills to boost your damage output if you want to be able to fight more consistently with the Merchant. Debt Collection can be great to obtain a larger amount of MAG too.
Merchant Synthesis Skills¶
The Merchant has access to only 2 Synthesis Skills:
Skill | Effect | Money/MP Cost | Allies Needed: |
---|---|---|---|
All Reset | Removes nearly all beneficial effects from all enemies. | 36 MP | Thief, Faker, or Merchant Lineages |
Fortune Slots | Low hit rate, but all hits deal critical physical Almighty damage. | 777 | Brawler, Merchant, or Summoner Lineages |
Both of these skills have their uses, but All Reset is by far the better of the two. Being able to remove almost all of the enemies buffs, besides unique and special boss fight buffs is incredibly valuable. The extra Almighty damage with Fortune Slots is also handy, but your focus will be on debuffing the enemy team with the Merchant’ Synthesis Skills.
