Various quests will have you visiting optional dungeons in Metaphor: ReFantazio, although not many will have you going back to older dungeons. Skullduggery is one such quest and it can be easily missed, due to the questgiver appearing at the entrance to the dungeon. Your task is to head into the Mausoleum and obtain a total of eight Mortaskulls, an item that will drop from the skeletons within.
Skullduggery Location¶
You won’t be able to start this quest until after you are finished with the Grand Cathedral dungeon. In fact, it’s better to wait until you complete your first Bounty, as this will unlock another quest, A Haunted Heirloom. Since both require you to go into the Mausoleum, it’s best to get them at the same time to save an extra day. Once you’re ready to go to the Mausoleum, go to its entrance via the one spot in the Grand Cathedral area of Grand Trad and you will see a Nervous Soldier right next to the actual entrance to the dungeon.
He mentioned that some nobles asked him to retrieve Mortaskulls from the Mausoleum, but the place is a complete den of monsters, so he doesn’t really want to go in there. Of course, he asks you to go in his stead, once he learns who you are. The goal for this quest is to simply retrieve eight Mortalskulls for him.
Mortaskulls Locations¶
If you’re looking for a full walkthrough of the Mausoleum, check out the Grand Trad Mausoleum page. As far as which enemies you need to defeat to get the Mortaskulls, you aren’t going to have to go too far in hunting them down. As you fully explore the dungeon, you will run into skeletons that appear from seemingly out of nowhere. In truth, they come from coffins along the walls that you will pass. So, if you see any coffins along the walls, then there’s a good chance that one or two skeletons will be appearing.
Now, depending on when you do this quest, you might be powerful enough to defeat the skeletons on the overworld. If you do this, then you will always receive a single Mortaskull. However, should you trigger a Squad Battle with them, then you will usually get multiple skeletons in the actual fight, with each one yielding a Mortaskull. So, it’s better to do Squad Battles for a few of them to quickly get this quest done and over with, lessening the amount you have to worry about in the end.
Thankfully, since the NPC who gave you the quest is at the entrance to the Mausoleum, you can actually head back there to turn it in. However, A Haunted Heirloom still requires you to complete the whole dungeon by fighting the boss, so you should still do that.
Skullduggery Rewards¶
Completing this quest will earn you two separate rewards, one of which will be 3,000 Reeves. Your other reward is a piece of armor, the Brigandine to be exact. This might not be a bad piece of armor, should you complete this quest as soon as possible.
