Metaphor: ReFantazio

Homo Gorleo Boss Guide

By
Jarrod Garripoli

You will encounter plenty of tougher foes during the course of Metaphor: ReFantazio, with the bosses offering up a lot of challenges. The first boss you will face in the game happens at the Northern Border Fort, during the prologue. Homo Gorleo is more of a tutorial boss than anything, but it could be possible to have some troubles on harder difficulties, since you are essentially solo against the boss.

Homo Gorleo will be the first boss of the game and kind of acts like a tutorial.

All of Homo Gorleo’s Attacks

Gorleo is fairly basic, in that it only has two real attacks it will do. You can “destroy” the body parts when they become available, which will weaken those attacks.

  • Wingbeat: Wind-based attack that should be resisted by your character, so the damage is negligible. This attack will become Frenzied Wings once you destroy the Wing.

  • Spin Slash: The worst of the two attacks this boss can do, as it inflicts more damage. However, the damage still isn’t too much that you need to immediately worry about it. The attack becomes Notchblade Spin once you destroy the Leg.

(1 of 3) Wingbeat is a wind-based attack that your character is strong against.

  • Devour: The boss will consume one of its apples to essentially fully heal itself. You can target the apples after this happens the first time to stop this. Gallica also offers to knock down the apples.

Homo Gorleo Boss Strategy

When you first encounter this boss with your main character and Strohl, all of your attacks will deal hardly any damage to it. You can do nothing but guard with your MC here and eventually, a cutscene will occur that gives you your newfound power. With this, you will now be solo with your main character, so it’s important to always keep tabs on your health. If it dips too low, don’t be afraid to use an item or cast the Dei spell to heal yourself. On your very first turn with the new power, simply cast Cyc on the boss, since that’s about all you can do.

Gorleo will then get its first turn, then the game will walk you through weak points. Basically, this game uses the Press Turn System, so whenever you get a critical hit or strike a weakness, you will gain an additional turn icon at the top of the screen. For example, with just the main character, you normally only get one turn icon, but doing either of the above will allow you to do another action per turn (the turn icon will be smaller). Unlike Persona, you won’t be able to do this indefinitely, as the half-turn icon cannot be extended.

(1 of 6) When the fight first starts, you won’t be able to do much of anything.

The boss’ extra parts will now become targets, so you can hit both the Leg and Wing here. Both are weak to wind, so use Cyc to attack them until you deplete their health. Doing this will cause the boss’ attacks to be much weaker, so it’s definitely a good idea. At some point, the boss will eat one of its apples to fully restore its health. After this happens, you will be able to target the apples to knock them off, but you can essentially ignore them for now and continue going after the Leg and Wing, if they aren’t destroyed yet.

Once a turn or two passes with the apples still on the boss, Gallica will chime in and offer up her services to knock all of the apples off for you. This will stop the boss from healing, so you can just keep doing what you’re doing to finish off Gorleo for good. One of your rewards for winning is Gorleo’s Apple, an item you can sell at any shop for some money.

After the battle is over, there will be a number of scenes and you’ll get your first true mission, which is to save the Prince. The old man you meet here will also join your party, named Grius. It’ll be time to move onto the next dungeon, the Nord Mines.
